Coningsby 10/06/2015

I brought my dad with me to see JUST JANE this week. We stopped off at Coningsby to watch the Typhoons on Wednesday afternoon. Can I just say thanks to all the crews who taxied past and virtually without exception, gave us on the wrong side of the fence a cheery wave or popped up the airbrake. My dad was actually blown away by the friendly gesture from a fine bunch of individuals! Thanks also to JA for a superb Hurricane display in the early evening. We were just in the right place at the right time......it was truly memorable! We were also blown away when he took the time to come over for a chat after he shut down. I don't know what I was expecting but everyone we encountered from JA down were superb ambassadors for the RAF.
I was proud to be British on Wednesday!
Many thanks gents and ladies.....my dad, an army man through and through, hasn't stopped talking about it!
I just wanted to say that.
MD

No Thing, much to my regret, I didn't.....time wasn't really on our side and it was an impromptu visit.........but I will make another trip down from Yorkshire in the not too distant future for sure!! Have you been in? We even met the people who run the café in the BBMF area......unfailingly polite and friendly!!

NL, I may do that but to be honest, I was a little underwhelmed when I went to a taxying day at Elvington last year. My main aim is to see the Vulcan again before it's grounded!!!!!

Yes, I live in Lincoln so it's on the doorstep so to speak. Newark Air Museum is another one of those peculiarly British places run by volunteers that have a really superb collection of aircraft and paraphernalia and it's literally just off the A1. Well worth a visit next time you are down that way, about £8 I think to get in.

There's a museum at Scampton and also at Waddington. not sure how you get access to them as a civvy so to speak but if you ring the units I'm sure they will put you on the right track.

Edit: not done Elvington on a taxi day but I've been to Bruntingthorpe on one of their fast run days and it was worth the trip just to see the Frightening do it's stuff. Elvington has become a bit difficult to fly into these days (I was nearly clobbered by a massive RC jet last time I went there, it was doing quite seriously about 200 kts) but Brunters is still GA friendly.

Entry to Waddington Heritage Centre by pre-arrangement only. Contact via e-mail [email protected] or leave a message on the answerphone 01522 72 8595. One of the HC coordinators should get back to you to arrange the visit. (Try to give a couple of weeks' notice pse as it is all run by volunteers).

Edited to add - Tuesday or Thursday preferred! The photo is of our 463 Sqn Lancaster in the HC which was recovered from a Scottish hillside 5 years ago.

Thanks for that NL......I'll head across to Elvington.......only 30 mins from MD towers! That will be awesome.....thanks for the steer! I'll give my daughter the heads up......she works at Cumberland infirmary in Carlisle. We saw it at Goodwood festival of speed a couple of years ago......she was literally in disbelief at this thunderous triangular flying monster that appeared above her head!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers NL
