BAe Woodford : bulldozers move in

Sorry to report that demolition of the former Avro/BAe factory at Woodford is finally under way. The building which was still wearing its WW2 camouflage and which turned out thousands of Lancasters, Ansons, Shackletons, Yorks, Vulcans to pick just a few is now a heap of rubble with the demolition machinery working as I type.

On the bright side, I understand the Avro heritage centre is due to reopen elsewhere on the site later this year.

Always marvelled at the fatigue testing rig of the Nimrod wing at Woodford. As a young Nimrod Flt Eng on a visit there , I had the most informative brief from the BAE Chief Structural Eng about mainplane fatigue testing as the pistons pounded away on the test article. Better than any text book or paper on the subject.
