Military Aviation A forum for the professionals who fly military hardware. Also for the backroom boys and girls who support the flying and maintain the equipment, and without whom nothing would ever leave the ground. All armies, navies and air forces of the world equally welcome here.

During 1992 Cessna modified a number of aircraft to help prevent the mis-fueling issue.
This was coupled with reducing the size of Avgas fuel nozzles to prevent Avtur nozzles entering the tank.

Ironically the one aircraft I encountered that had the mod incorporated was reported as being unable to reach normal rpm in flight. It flew to Milan over the alps on a regular basis. After investigation we recovered a reel of masking tape that had been left in the tank during the mod with all the adhesive washed off and gathering on the fuel filter. Very lucky man to survive the flight. The whole filter looked as if it was covered in snot. As soon as the fuel evaporated the glue went hard. Cleaning out the tanks(wet wings) which had to be done with fuel in them in the summer heat was an appalling job never to be forgotten and bloody dangerous as well.

The navigator who received fatal injuries deserves to be remembered by name: Flight Lieutenant Peter Daren LANE 44.

His name is recorded in St Clement Danes' Church and on the Armed Forces Memorial at Alrewas.

Intended to move V-bomber crews and their equipment around, it failed to meet its required performance once 5 chubby V-bomber crew members and their kit had been loaded.
Wouldn't happen nowadays, when resemblance to a racing snake appears to be a requirement for aircrew.

We were built for comfort in those days.

I am amazed to see that they built 80 Bassets in total, including a 10 pax version!

Isn't this the aircraft with the "dial a ride" system installed - uncontrollable Dutch Rolls were a particular favourite I believe.
