I was the Local Controller when one of our Hunters (with numerous problems) pulled the handle whilst turning downwind. The canopy deployed just as he disappeared into the trees around Tengah Village in Singapore.

In the Bar afterwards, he said that the parachute straps bit, his vizor snapped down... and, as he put his hands up to lift it, he hit the ground.

He ended up as the RAF Chief of the Air Staff.

(PS: I won't mention the other day when I was in Local and he did a roller on the 230-gal drop tanks. Sorry Sir Peter, but the story has to be told )

Bugger that for a game of soldiers, as a layman with squat para experience, I am surprised he dumped his main chute, he seemed to be in a controlled descent, all be it with a messed up chute.
