P-8 Searching for Malaysian Airlines
Hi all,
I see that there is a P-8 searching alongside the P-3 and whatever else the locals have.
Now Im sure the P-8 has made some big advances in ASW and ASuW etc, but in a situation like this, low level search, how is it comparing to the P-3? Any idea how its search area corresponds to the P-3?
Cheers,
Blah

I'm guessing the answers to those questions is why the P8 is playing. And the answers won't be forthcoming any time soon, unless the P8 finds the missing aircraft. If that happens, it'll be something for Boeing & the USN to shout from the rooftops.
First real world experience and mission to test the Poseidon capabilities, I suppose.
I believe the Poseidons have attended Joint Warrior as their first overseas deployment last year.
Best of luck to the crews searching.
Cheers

Im sure you're right.
having been involved in the introduction of a couple of new types I understand how hard it can be to convince people of the improvements of a new type. Also new ways of doing things can be hard for people to accept.
In this situation though, where it really comes down to flying low and slow, looking out all the windows, Im struggling to see how the P-8 can compete. Im sure its a great step up in many other areas, but low level endurance?
Quite a few countries have this requirement at the top of their lists. They must be looking at their P-3s and wondering how long they can get them to soldier on...
