All fair points Roland. My point though is that of all the defence companies in the world, Airbus DS has the most wide ranging portfolio in terms of platform types and mission sets (certainly in terms of military aviation), and so I wasn't quite sure why your ire should be directed at them in particular. For sure there are gaps in its portfolio, but that's true for every company.

Roland

Although all these countries might NEED these aircraft or WANT them can they afford them?

Outside the USA (and maybe China) buy in penny packets and it takes years (think Indian or Canadian procurement here)

P-8 looks like it may operate from Teesside Airport for Joint Warrior, rather than Leeming.

Teeside is long way from the Bigg Market IIRC - if they want the joys(???) of an evening in Newcastle they'd be at Woolsington

Teeside is a lot closer than Lossie! Close enough for a 'cultural vist' led no doubt by any seedcorning 'cultural exchange' types on the crew
Back on thread - I wonder if the Labour conference will include any Defence spending plans? (I know, I know, anyone seen my coat?)

Anyone else pick up on the SOS for Def speech this morning about Investing in capability and new reconnaissance aircraft for the RAF.

I think he used the phrase 'more surveillance aircraft' for the RAF. Quite a thin statement and could mean SCAVENGER, conversion of the KA350 to Shadow, Sentinel OSD deferral or of course something that looks like an MMA.

Who knows.

Bannock / JTO,

Care to add a bit more detail? Was this at the Tory party conference? Was he commenting on what the Tory defence plans will be, should they maintain power next year?

Sorry PA but the line I quoted was pretty much it for the RAF. When he talked about the RN and Army he quoted specific programmes (all previously announced) so it really was slim pickings for the light blue.

Apparently the speech is on YouTube but having caught it live I can promise you that it is not worthy of your time.

MoD MMA activity continues but the opportunities for a formal announcement drift by with Christmas recess and the pre-election purdah not that far away.

That is correct. We are undermanned in current ISTAR fleets, and the last WSOp streamed that way in 2010. What with redundancy and PVRs since, it's time to train some more. Planning this new ISTAR course has been ongoing for 3 years though so it's not really news.

Lets hope the WSOp (ISTAR) course has to expand significantly during the next 18 months!

Not really my business any more (not that ever stops us on pprune!) but what is the focus of the syllabus these days? Still some radio/radar theory I'd guess and the usual airmanship throughout? Must be difficult to plan not knowing if there needs to be any MPA flavourings (basic acoustics etc). I'd love to do it all again (especially the distractions of Donny - warning - thread drift...)

Bannock,

Hunt for subs. It was pointed out to them last year that it was not something that we do anymore
Not true. We still have WSOps hunting for subs. Granted, there may only be about 20 on SEEDCORN, but they are still doing the business.

Maybe the advert for WSOps plural means we are looking to recruit 2 of them to feed into the predicted SEEDCORN churn!

from the RAF recruitment website.

I must be missing something

https://www.raf.mod.uk/recruitment/r...stem-operator/

In the RAF

My Role

‘As an Electronic Warfare specialist, I fly with the same crew of 12 both in the UK and overseas. In the UK, we go out over the sea and look for submarines or conduct Search and Rescue operations. But while abroad, we fly over land – and use our surveillance systems to provide support to the ground troops.’
My Day

'If I’m flying, I might come in a couple of hours before take-off for a briefing. Each mission can last several hours – so, once we’re flying, we take it in turns to do different tasks, such as photographing submarines, watching the screens, and even cooking!

If you trawl through all of the pages of this topic, I think you'll find that this was highlighted several months, maybe even several years back. It would appear that no-one at RAF Recruiting reads PPRuNe - well obviously not all of it!!

Maybe they're keeping it on there, as a new capability is inbound...
