Fars News Agency :: Iran Halts Oil Exports to 6 EU States

"Iran stopped oil exports to Italy, Spain, Netherlands, France, Greece and Portugal, media reports said on Wednesday."

Interesting - not the UK. Iran trying to split the UK from the rest of Europe?

The UK isn't currently an importer of Iranian crude,. We stopped buying at the end of 2011.

Interesting that Belgium and Germany aren't on the list though.

Eight European Union countries imported Iranian crude oil in the third quarter of 2011, Eurostat figures show. Former buyers of Iranian crude, including the U.K., Austria, Poland, and Portugal, cut their imports to zero in the third quarter.

Country Imports bpd Percent Imports
1. Italy 204,000 13.2
2. Spain 170,000 16.2
3. Greece 158,000 53.1
4. France 75,000 6.0
5. Belgium 71,000 11.6
6. Netherlands 15,000 1.5
7. Germany 8,000 0.4
8. Czech Republic 1,800 1.4

Does this mean petrol bombs will now be in short supply in Athens?

And the other boots continue to fall around the Middle East. I wonder what sort of warhead they hope to acquire to go with these........

As an aside, I also wonder if they got help with the technology from the Israeli's before their relations went sour?

AW&ST (The World Feb 13th Issue): Turkish IRBM

In a sharp turn of policy, Turkey has decided to develop a 2,500-km-range (1560mi) ballistic missile within the next two years. Yucel Altunbasak, head of Turkey's state Scientific Research Institute, said that the missile is being developed under a request from Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Turkey will test fire a 1,500-km-range missile this year, according to Altunbasak. Publicly officials have not explained why Turkey needs an intermediate range ballistic missile.

I think Russia is more likely to be the biggest beneficiary being closer to europe and already having pipelines installed to deliver.

Probably from the Chinese? Turkey bought their B-611 SRBMs from China and have cooperated on further missile projects. Pakistan and Turkey also have close relations.

Iranian naval ships dock at Syria’s Tartus port

Two Iranian Navy’s ships have docked in the Syrian port of Tartus to provide maritime training to Syria’s naval forces under an agreement signed between Tehran and Damascus a year ago.

The Iranian fleet, consisting of a destroyer and a supply ship, arrived at Tartus port, situated 220 kilometers (136 miles) northwest of the Syrian capital Damascus, on Friday a day after they received permission from the Egyptian armed forces to sail along the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea on their way to the Syrian coast, Mehr News Agency reported on Saturday.

Iran's Navy has increased its presence in international waters since last year, deploying vessels in the Indian Ocean and sending two ships to the Mediterranean Sea for the first time in February 2011 via the Suez Canal.

Interestingly the Russians have moved one of their Navy fleet tankers from Tartus since the Iranians arrived.

Tanker Ivan Bubnov is still transmitting weather and sea states in Morse Code and is, as of 18 February 12 GMT, hove to at Map Link

FARS website describes them as
"The Navy's 18th flotilla is comprised of Kharg warship and Shahid Naqdi destroyer."
Other sources say its the Kharg plus the frigate Alvand

The Kharg is a 1977 British built equivalent to an RFA - and the Israelis seem to think she's stuffed full of missile for Hizbollah. Of course it may just be carrying guns for the Syrians.....

First you have the Russian making an arms run into Syria, guarded by - among other things - their only carrier, now you have another supply run from Iran into Syria
Who -or what - is next?

Fars News Agency :: Iranian Fleet of Warships Enter Mediterranean Sea

heres a quote from that second link
"debkafile‘s military sources report that Iran is rapidly seizing the fall of the Mubarak regime in Cairo and the Saudi King Abdullah’s falling-out with President Barack Obama (see debkafile of Feb. 10, 2011) as an opportunity not to be missed for establishing a foothold along the Suez Canal and access to the Mediterranean for six gains:
1. To cut off, even partially, the US military and naval Persian Gulf forces from their main route for supplies and reinforcements;
2. To establish an Iranian military-naval grip on the Suez Canal, through which 40 percent of the world’s maritime freights pass every day:
3. To bring an Iranian military presence close enough to menace the Egyptian heartland of Cairo and the Nile Delta and squeeze it into joining the radical Iranian-Syrian-Iraqi-Turkish alliance;
4. To thread a contiguous Iranian military-naval line from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea through the Suez Canal and the Gaza Strip and up to the ports of Lebanon, where Hizballah has already seized power and toppled the pro-West government.
5. To eventually sever the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, annex it to the Gaza Strip and establish a large Hamas-ruled Palestinian state athwart the Mediterranean, the Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea.
By comparison, a Fatah-led Palestinian state on the West Bank within the American orbit be politically and strategically inferior.
6. To tighten the naval and military siege on Israel."

Iranian navy ships return from Syria through Suez

CAIRO | Tue Feb 21, 2012 5:47am EST
(Reuters) - Two Iranian naval ships returned from Syria through the Suez Canal Tuesday, a Suez Canal source said.

The ships entered the canal from the Mediterranean Sea early in the morning, heading south toward the Red Sea, and were expected to leave the canal Tuesday afternoon, the source said.

The ships had docked at the Syrian port of Tartous, in a show of support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a regional ally of Iran.

I don't think Iranians are doing anything in Egypt that Muslim Brotherhood are not already doing......

I do forecast Suez canal having problems in the near future as Egypt decides to take action.

Arab spring.................more like just another war.

I get the sense that the Muslim Brotherhood take a dim view of folk from Iran meddling in things in their area, at least in Egypt.

Would Egypt close down the canal again, as was done after the 1967 war?

My, wouldn't that make for an interesting impact on global and European economies.

A certain style of "anal retentive" (slamming shut a passage) demonstration of discontent.
