Satellite images reveal new underground Chinese submarine base

Jane's says it was first informed by Asian defence sources about the construction of the base five years ago, but has now been able to confirm this through high-resolution, newly commercially available satellite imagery.

New implications for the South China Seas and the Spratly Islands?

Indeed! Many analysts suggest that arguments over the Spratly Islands and their associated oil reserves in the South China Seas will be the cause of the next world war. This will cast a whole new light on a possible outcome!

Let's hope someone somewhere has some sense, and an unpleasant but purely accidental nasty happens to this base, and/or their carriers before it's too late - having dealt with Chinese, I reckon they are as trustworthy as Africans, but unfortunately more skilled...

Oh dear, not very P.C, but that's sadly the case.

The flight route used by the EP-3E Aries would have been one flown over many years in that region. These regular and routine EP-3 flights in international airspace would have been no suprise to the Chinese. Revealed in the following transcripts after the event.

http://edition.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0104/13/wbr.00.html

http://edition.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0104/13/se.02.html

'It was on a well-known flight path that we have used for decades. Many countries perform such flights, including China.'

It was revealed that the Chinese Navy pilot, Wang Wei, had made previous dangerously close passes to other EP-3 flights. Video footage was shown of Wang Wei holding up what was believed to be an Internet website or his e-mail address in order for the EP-3 crew to make contact with him. The U.S had officially complained to the Chinese about these dangerously close passes.
