New Years Honours List 2013 - Names we know!
ATC Awards
I've been an ATC instructor since 1975. In that time I served 25 years in uniform (ATC WO then commissioned). I was awarded a Cadet Forces Medal, followed by a Bar. Since then, nothing. I'm not complaining. Like many others I do it to help the kids realise their ambitions, be it in the services or the outside. The real reward comes when an ex-cadet comes back and starts off with 'I really enjoyed my time here...;
Maybe I'm old fashioned - I just find that much more rewarding than anything else.....

PS,
My late father did 25 years as a JP, as well 50 years as a football referee, and then as an assessor. Anyone like to guess what he got for all that???
Maybe I'm old fashioned - I just find that much more rewarding than anything else.....

I suspect his argument is that the man has been well rewarded for his success, and will now become a multi-millionaire. Quite right too - he deserves it.
But 'honours' should not be about 'success', but 'service'. It should be about years of effort with little or no reward, and for the benefit of our society. Not about winning more gold medals than anyone else, hosting 'Strictly Come Dancing', or having three thousand platinum discs to your accountant's credit.
Service. Service is what should be recognised. And it isn't.

Sir Bradley? Dont see anything unusual there. There are plenty of precedents from way back, including Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Don Bradman and Sir Gordon Richards. All good blokes, no doubt, but they were knighted for their sporting achievements and Wiggins is no different. I know nothing about cycling as a sport, seems like a refined form of masochism to me, but good luck to the guy I say.

Oh I did explain, but my post (not rude or abusive) was 'removed'. It was to do with his tweeting immediately after attaining his Gold, and his attitude to a certain Lady at the BBC Awards; I guess someone is litigation-sensitive.

several times I have tried to write up people for the awards in question. Despite following the 'crib' sheet as instructed I was only successful once. Now you may argue that I was not up to the job. But when you are told that the station's allocation of a particular 'gong' has already been decided then it is a mite discouraging. However I always mentioned the fact that he/she had been recommended in the individual's ACR . I was once told that it was going to a chap for services to the station Catholic Church and when I suggested in that case the Pope ought to honour him I got a flea in my ear.

With the ATC it really is down to the chain of command, a lot of staff with over ten yrs service, including CIs, in my wing have Lord Lieutenants Certificates (even I got one) or have been nominated for them, the previous Wg Cdr had an OBE and there have been numerous commendations for other staff. If you are on a Sqn and you believe someone deserves recognition say to your boss, he may just not thought about it.

Oh dear, Oh dear......I can imagine Execs at Odi/Ben being a bit down in the mouth when they see that the self licking JHC u write me up and I'll write u up didnt go as planned this year........cynicism or truth?

I for one loathe awards, why should someone be honoured for simply doing their job is beyond me.. Now if it was Aunty Betty etc down the road who for 40 years has given her time for free to help the local kids, then they deserve an OBE, not some old fart that has simply reached the rank of AVM etc, that's simply collecting badges as you go along, rather like McDonald's staff and their stars... Pointless and worthless.
