Great stuff! The Derbyshire Peak District. Howden, Derwent and Ladybower reservoirs. 617 Sqn used this area for practice prior to the raid, hence the return of the Lanc.

Back in the late 1940s I went as an ATC cadet to summer camp at Oakington whilst there we were given a talk on the Dams raid by Squadron Leader 'Micky' Martin who had piloted one of the aircraft on the Dams raid. Early the next morning we were loaded into a York and were taken on a reenactment of the raid. I would like to say it was the most memorable flight of my life, but unfortunately I spent most of the flight being violently airsick and dont remember much about it. At least no one was shooting at us.

I was interested in the sound. In all our reading of wartime ops the one thing we can't get a decent idea of is: what did a Lanc sound like from the inside? And this video gives us an idea. Against all my expectations at least, the mix was about 80% airflow & buffet to 20% engines.
For forty years I've been reading of Lancaster ops over Europe and in my imagination the sound inside was all engines - four Merlins amplified by all those rigid and boxed metal sections.............wrong!!

Way back in Summer 2000, I had the great chance of flying with 617Sqn low-level across the Kuwaiti desert.

Thank you for posting. A very emotive video, and compared with the Buccaneer video talked about on another thread, this shows just how much of an easy target these Lancaster's were (oh, and yes,I could hear the music in my head too).
I have mixed views about the dams raid, and it's success depends largely on what the outcome should have been (i.e. tactical/strategic/morale (both sides)/propaganda), but have no doubts whatsoever on the crews involved, and am shrunk with humility by their efforts on such a difficult and almost one way mission!
