Military AircrewA forum for the professionals who fly the non-civilian hardware, and the backroom boys and girls without whom nothing would leave the ground. Army, Navy and Airforces of the World, all equally welcome here.
I and Mrs SW are speechless and gutted for everyone concerned. Two well respected and professional aviators lost. A great loss to 43, Leuchars and the F3 community. Played golf yesterday with one of them, can't believe it was his last. He did finish on a belter, trounced me by the 9th. RIP guys
I have never served on 43, but I have either worked at or been closely involved with Leuchars since my first UAS days and throughout my service life.
My thoughts and prayers are with everyone at Leuchars, and with those involved in the aftermath and recovery operation. I know that there are no words that I can offer to comfort the families of the two guys that didn't come home today, but I share your grief.
Rest in peace, and I hope that the Leuchars community will be able to give each other strength over the coming weeks. I can't help feeling that the place will not be the same when I next visit.
Two brave men down and a deep sadness and pain in 43 and at Leuchars tonight. RIP guys. Our hearts go out to your families and your colleagues. Sandy is right, the word and the feeling is indeed just that - gutted. 43 will rally of course, it was well forged and is no stranger to sacrifice. Gloria Finis.
Can't help wishing I was closer - same for Mrs VS. Ex 43 (Phantom days)
Timely reminder that in over 100 years of aviation, and lots of challenges, the ground has yet to lose.
Watched this thread at lunchtime to try and find some info, but the whole thing promptly go put into perspective by reading 'neeps' posts. As she said , one person's good news is probably someone else's bad news. How do these wonderful people cope?
After a long chat with my other half, who incidentally was not my other half whilst I was a real aviator but has similar views about my mountaineering exploits, I have come to the conclusion that if I had to go, then given the choice of; the side of Binein an Fhidhleir, RSI from typing on this f**kin keyboard or trashed on the M62 I know which I would chose.
Thoughts go to all those touched by this sad event.
Rest in Peace gentlemen. A very sad day indeed with the loss of life in Afghanistan as well. My thoughts are with you, your families and the whole RAF Leuchars community.
I hope, and am sure, that the Mess at Leuchars is upholding the finest traditions of the Royal Air Force tonight.
Thoughts and prayers to the aircrew and their families, friends and colleagues from RAF Leuchars. My thoughts also go out to the friends and families of Trooper Hammond and Lt Cononel Thorneloe.
