Wattisham Airfield 70th Anniversary

Got this in my email this morning from the AAC Association.

STOP PRESS: WATTISHAM AIRFIELD 70TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT

2009 will see Wattisham Flying Station mark its 70th Anniversary as an operational military airfield. Constructed in the heart of rural Suffolk, the Wattisham airbase has been home to units of the Royal Air Force, the United States Army Air Force and, moste recently, the British Army. 2009 is a time to reflect on what these forces have achieved and we plan to hold a commemorative event spanning Saturday 11 July and Sunday 12 July 2009.

What started as a simple milestone event has grown considerably during the planning stages and I now need to make the wider Army Aviation community aware of our programme. This is being done now to give those who may have links with Wattisham the opportunity to attend the celebration. Please forgive this late notice but, as I have mentioned it was never our intention to use this milestone as a focal point for reuinion activity. The primary purpose it to strengthen our links with the local community but everyone who would like to attend would be made most welcome.

There are 4 parts to the weekend. A parade will take place in Hadleigh to cement a bond of friendship between the town and the station. This starts the weekend of celebration and takes place on Saturday (11 July) during the morning. The parade is to be followed by an open afternoon at Wattisham airfield (open ti serving personnel (military and civil servants) and families (ID card) as well as civilians and veterans who have tickets). On Saturday evening there will be a Hangar Party for Wattisham personnel and then, on Sunday morning, there will be a memorial open air service followed by a curry lunch.

The points of interest for Army Aviation serving personnel and veterans are likely to be the open afternoon and the memorial service. The open afternoon will consist of areana displays, static displays and flying demonstrations. With less than a month to go it is probably now too late to send out tickets and therefore if anyone is interested in attending the Wattisham 70th Anniversay weekend then they should contact Tracey Wadley on either 01449 728207 or email [email protected]. Details will be logged and access will be granted on the days in question.
