Military AircrewA forum for the professionals who fly the non-civilian hardware, and the backroom boys and girls without whom nothing would leave the ground. Army, Navy and Airforces of the World, all equally welcome here.
To the LADY pilot of the Tornado which overflew Shobdon as planned, precisely on time (11:30L) and from the exact notified direction, MANY thanks from all the girls at Shobdon, you really showed the male population here just how it should be done. They have had to eat their words. It was also nice to see the two Hawks yesterday. Best wishes to the retiring pilot of the lead aircraft.

Multi million pound jet bristling with INUs,GPS and a navigator manages to find airfield on time on a nice day - and from a given direction too!!!
You would be surprised how many of them don't arrive on time - usually late, (they tell us what time to expect them) or from the direction they have stated and sometimes a different number of them too - two aircraft may arrive as one, or three. Passing W-E has been known to be E-W (in fact almost any heading you care to pick from 185 to 355 when passing W-E and the reciprocal for E-W). The culprits have invariably been MALE. (Can't speak for the navigators as we never hear them speaking to us) Oh, and whilst the weather was nice over Shobdon itself, there were some pretty grotty patches around with some nasty, heavy showers. However, all are MOST welcome and will always have an audience on the ground here waiting for their arrival. PLEASE keep up your flying visits, we really enjoy them If anyone knows who this pilot was, please would you pass on our thanks?
why did the Viet Taff dig so many pork chop shaped lakes??
To lull the sheep into a false sense of security regarding their ultimate fate? Seriously, as I said previously, every visit is welcome be it planned or unplanned. If you are in something fast and noisy it would be wonderful if you would call at 10 miles out as calling 5 miles away often results in an unseemly scramble to get outside the clubhouse in time. all well and good, but she has to park it afterwards
Long before ladies were allowed into the RAF to fly the MEN needed marshallers to help them to park their aircraft. I have to say that on my one and only flying visit to a RAF airfield I was quite amused and amazed to have someone to marshall me to my parking place.
I am not a lady pilot! My nav, on the other hand, was a lady (and still is, for that matter). I let her talk on the radio - we have to find something for navs to do now that the jet has GPS and LINS... Anyway, it's always good to visit Shobdon having arranged it first!!! All I did was randomly fly around LFA 7 and 4 until I flew over an airfield.
But thanks for the compliment. Nobody was as surprised as I that we made it on time!
I felt sorry for the lone spotter sitting at the entrance to the Loop... in really nasty weather.
On another point, is the pink tree still pink? If so, does anyone know where it is (up around Hay somewhere). I haven't seen it since my days at Valley (when I certainly did not call Shobdon before I (my students) flew through!!!)
Never mind, not everyone achieves perfection. You did, however, make a lot of people very happy that day so please return as often as you can. If you come on foot / by car etc I'm, sure someone here will buy you a tea / coffee / whatever. PS: notes on local areas requiring special attention are available
As some one who used to instruct at Shobdon (early 80's) I must say that I used to enjoy the intrusions both pre booked and impromptu. I never felt that there was any risk of collision with the lost ones as they were always well below me and never seemed to be going east west but always north south. The only time I did get a little worried was when I was instructing forced landings away from the airfield. But even then on the two occaisions I came a bit close to some thing green and grey and going very fast, I was not quite as low as they were. ( I did get my "revenge" on a tornando in the Firth of Forth once, but that is another (sea) story.)
