Why do some Squadrons have letter after their number?

Military Aviation A forum for the professionals who fly military hardware. Also for the backroom boys and girls who support the flying and maintain the equipment, and without whom nothing would ever leave the ground. All armies, navies and air forces of the world equally welcome here.

Book in the Post Office today 61 (Lincoln Imp) Sqn.

With the method of assigning sqns today I wonder how big a consequetive run we could get? Sqns like 43, 45, 100, 101, 120 etc of course 'take' some of the potential ones out of the sequence.

I don't know how big a run we have at the moment. Is it 1(F) to IX(B) now that X has been disbanded?

The Jags left a few gaps too.
