Crawley Down or Copthorne used to be OK but it's a while since I lived there.

East Grinstead is nice but traffic is a nightmare morning and evening rush hour so driving through it is not ideal. Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill are both options, the former more so, and both 20 mins drive from LGW, with regular trains into London & LGW airport.
