I hear that the latest 380, especially in 2 class config, is doing pretty well (assuming it is full obviously).
If it is a replacement deal I really wonder what will happen with the early airframe...

Most airlines wouldn't touch it.

The lessors don't need to sell it. After the 12 year lease they have recovered their capitall cost and extacted profit from the aircraft. This is the reason that the lease deals on 380's at EK anyhow were over a 12 year period. They can sell it cheap, scrap it or try an attractive lease option.

In other words if the airlines might walk from the deal after 10/12 years the actual owners of the aircrafts are scrambling to find a way to get some value past scrap...

As far as I remember he's looking for the RR engine.
From a pilot point of view (I haven't yet flown the RR powered 380s here) I believe the engine response is sluggish compared to the GP 7270 engine; three spools and more inertia and all that! Just from what some of my colleagues tell me...

Poor Glofish... This will mess with his head
But i can take it like a man, thanks for your concern WK.
For the less indoctrinated:
I think it is in conjunction with the Qatar row. As Airbus just released an article of how they try to sustain a production rate of 12 (!) units per year, when 27 were needed for break-even (their numbers), the ME instability being a more than welcome relief for European airlines, the UAE want to showcase their importance by "pretending" to buy some more 380 and by that trying to play the good guys.
After all the sheik still wants to be able to go to Paris for shopping and put on a pathetic hat at Ascott.
As a potential lessor, i would be extremely reluctant to offer for a new 380, when a huge number is visibly parked every morning on the north side and no other orders are in sight in the solar system. Except if the conditions would suit me, yes, then it might be sound. But then the guys leasing it must be out of their commercial minds.
I bet such order will be "modified" in due time.
As for the latest rumor, i find it cute:
The 380 that no one wants no more could be used as artificial reefs, to compensate for the monumental destruction when setting up the palms. I would actually volunteer to land one onto the sea! Sully showed it's possible, even when he apparently had no authority on it.
