He's been appointed as the Principal of the Emirates Flight Training Academy.

Just when we thought we were going to get rid of the poisoned dwarf he's managed to stick around...

Why doesn't he just sod off.

So, I assume there won't be any coffee machines in the academy to tempt the poor lads into drinking coffee while walking around in uniform to satisfy AS demented views.

Whilst I'm in no way sad to see him leave, I do wonder why people get so excited about some of these rules. Wearing a hat ruserious? Yes, it's part of the uniform and has been for the last 30 years! They provide it for free, they clean it for free so just wear it. Rucksacks? Save them for desert and mountain hikes. Providing a Wenger bag for all pilots (again, free), stopped those that continued to ignore the 'request' not to use them. And it's the same for drinking coffee in uniform whilst walking through the terminal in full view of passengers. Hardly a professional image, is it? We wouldn't expect to see the cabin crew doing it so why should we. Lead by example and all that? If you're really that desperate that you can't wait 10 minutes until you get on the aircraft, change career and open a coffee shop!

Feel free to begin the usual barrage of retorts but the really sad part is that there are a minority of our colleagues who find it so difficult to conform to even basic protocol that the need for these 'basics' have to be reminded to them....and everyone else too.

Don't blame Stealey, blame the minority of idiots that spoil it for everyone else.

My issue Harry is a very senior manager fixating on small stuff that is way below his pay grade, instead of sorting out some of the really important issues in the airline, that seem to drip on from one year to the next.

I don't disagree ruserious. Unfortunately it's a cultural issue within this Company that certain grades are completely ineffectual when it comes to decision making and are simply not empowered to take action. How many times do you have to go to SVP or DSVP level to get the desired results? It does make you wonder what exactly they are there for in the first place other than boost Costa's turnover.

As for the important stuff such as lack of crews, fatigue through poor roster planning, insufficient leave slots and DEC positions, I agree. We've known for years that the aircraft are coming so why is it a surprise all of a sudden. It smacks of incompetence. Dealing with these issues, issues which directly effect our quality of life, should without doubt be a priority. However, it's far easier to have deck chairs lined up neat and tidy than to plug a 40 foot gaping hole.

That would require accepting you have a hole in the first place, something he's never done!

Oh boy Harry, where does one start? I know, We don't work in the military! Yes image or perceptions are moderately important in a public space but the issues you mention border on the pathetic and are indicative of a lack anything approaching common sense.
Who cares about a rucksack, backpack, shoulder bag or flight bag? It's nickel and dime micromanaging at its worst. Drinking a coffee? Honestly? I go out of my way to have a slurp now that TCAS and the uniform Stasi deemed it to be verboten, why you ask? funnily enough it's because I am a thinking, caring empathetic adult who has thus far managed to do pretty well in this world without bowing to the universally retarded, collectively stupid and their way of thinking.
My world view is simple, if it doesn't affect the job that I am paid to do then bugger off, let me as an adult with the benefit of a considerable amount of years behind me make that decision. In a word this is, as it has always been, about control, control and encroaching control over every little detail, every bit of mindless faff and of course control over you.
Harry you seem to be reasonably intelligent, for the most part, but if you are blind or ignorant to that then I feel sorry for you. TCAS is who he is and does what he does because the man is a frustrated tyrant who never rose to the level in his previous organisation that he thought he ought to have, he has indulged in behaviour here that would never have been tolerated in a more balanced environment with layers of personal and financial accountability.
He has been empowered in his role by those above him who bear little resemblance to what we would consider normal human beings and it is those very individuals who will continue to contribute to the downfall of this place one coffee slurped, backpack carried and hat not worn at a time.

Harry,

The company is asking pilots not to post names, or discuss company matters on social medias, or forums. They provide this guidance to pilots for free!!!
Why don't you follow the rules....Simple....Isn't it!

I just can't see why then you'd expose yourself to these individuals by pushing back. Is it really so much of a hardship to comply with what are actually fairly standard requests? EK is not unique. I can't see BA allowing their pilots to waltz through T5 with rucksacks and coffee, an airline that has introduced 'beyond the flight deck' to it's pilots and compulsory hats for cabin crew on the new contracts. It knows the importance of branding and has recognised the success this has brought to Emirates. Airlines know it's got cock all to do with individual flying ability and whether you're a 'nice' person or not. It's about selling the brand.

So, I comply not only because it's easy to do so and is generally professionally anyway, but more to avoid those power hungry tyrants the satisfaction of bollocking me for something so trivial.

If you want to expose yourself to that possibility then be my guest.

Harry

ekpilot. Advice noted, with thanks!

I find it amusing when so called professionals feel it necessary to bite back a little against the control they may feel under, especially when it comes to such minor issues as being discussed. When someone is proud enough to admit they actually 'go out of my way to have a slurp.....', I really do wonder what depths this profession has sunk too. We, without doubt, our own worst enemies at times.

Monarch Man. If you really want to impress your F/O with such rebel tendencies, perhaps a cheeky visit to the loo without a tie would tick the box!

Harry,
Comparing rucksacks to drinking coffee in public are two complete separate issues. I assure you the public does not care if I walk to the gate with a cup of coffee in hand or not and most wouldn't even care if I had a backpack on. I wear my uniform, hat and even throw a bit of shine on the old boots but I will not be told when and where I can have a cup of coffee because some meager and outdated manager thinks he is correct and has a power trip.

Harry and Bymon, I also find it disappointing in equal measure when I see and hear fellow professionals bemoan the fact that the industry has lost its way due to this that or the other, when in fact they themselves bear huge responsibility, the downward trend is due to them not having the ability either through ignorance, a basic lack of intelligence, or most likely a selective and expedient attitude to what "they" find important or unimportant. I learned a long long time ago that a punitive and dictatorial attitude/culture that is imposed on people works well, initially, but sooner rather than later it has the effect of creating far more rebels who through their own personal acts of rebellion undermine and reverse any positive aspects that were envisaged by those who would impose said measures, so much so does this continue, that the more draconian the rules, the worse the situation becomes. Sound familiar? please however feel free to live with your beautifully pressed uniforms, lacking caffeine and a good robust bag to carry your essentials in, safe I am sure in the knowledge that your path is the only true path to follow.
You guys just don't get it, despite things being in plain sight.
Bymonek I impress my FO's by treating them as adults, what about you?

It's all about perception

To the average Westerner a pilot holding a coffee without his hat on in the departure hall has nothing unprofessional and going to the toilet with his tie on in flight looks about as pathetic to them as showing up at a pilot meeting in white pyjamas ....

Unbelievable, I can't believe we are having this discussion.
Pilots afraid of having a cup of coffee while in uniform. Have your coffee and relax for f sake!

Think we may have lost our way on this one somewhat!!

The fact is the only person in the company who likes TCAS and his pathetic rules is "Harry".

I for one will be pleased to see the back of him, I've never conformed to his ways and never will, if the silly little man had his way we would probably all march to the aircraft!! (save walking I guess)

I wish him luck in life, to be hated by so many pilots must be awful

These days most pax are far too busy on their iPhone / iPads to even notice any AirCrew whom might pass by them and / or be concerned that an AirCrew member is wearing a hat (or not) and / or slurping back a latté (or not).

Conversely, the vast majority of pax's preoccupation is for having a simple to use, reliable, 'value for money' flight experience, rather than anything to do with an airlines 'image' and / or 'safety' (the latter being something that they, the pax, take for granted).

In counterpoint, given the above, it's particularly unfortunate that many of todays airline's so called 'leaders' & 'managers' (e.g. typically those with a grandiose title of SVP this & that, or some such) are actually nought more than mediocre stock (wherein describing them as 'a bunch of out of their depth chancers' might be a more apt description?!), much exemplified by many of them being stuck in a time-warp from airline practices of yesteryear. Therein many of them are quite simply yesterdays men (and women), they typically being devoid of new ideas and / or under-qualified and / or under-experienced and, accordingly, in desperate attempts to appear 'effective' and / or 'to be doing something', they typically resort to being ever more dictatorial, often coupled with micro-management. The expression that "They have a firm grasp of the nonessentials" is never more true, and I say this based upon having neigh on 30 years in the airline business and during that time I've been privy to some great leaders & managers, but also an unbelievable number of chancers & wankers, and (imho) I can readily discern the difference between them!
