Expat DEC on B777 for THY

Hi All,

Curious if any expat, non Turkish, Direct entry Captains on the B777 for Turkish Airlines care to share their experiences.

Most, if not all, the posts are aimed at the B737/A320 drivers and that tends to be quite negative.

Would like to know if its any diffirent on the widebody long haul stuff, specifically on the B777.

Good or bad it all helps. Days off, roster practices, commuting, in flight experiences with crew etc. Anything

Thanks in advance.

It depends. If you are pensioner or near pension or if your work for fun it might work ok. Still, notwithstanding the appearances, you will not be welcome . Turkish are extremely nationalistic and at times it will become even evident. The general consensus is that all will be kicked out in due time to leave space to heroic local aviators. I anticipated the process my self. You will be flying for quite some time as second captain and that might become interesting seen the number of peculiar personalities. Than you will have to deal with Ipad experts FO that will point out all possible silly details but that normally will miss the big picture. Professionally if nothing has changed a pretty poor environment The few that came from Dubai... went back to Dubai. I think there is still a couple of chaps..that tried but did not make it back. Salary are down 30 % on exchange rate I'm been told. Good point commuting with 8 block off days and salary paid in time. Enjoy.

Yabancypilot...Honestly! Everytime there is a question about THY you stand up like Jack in the Box and pretend to be an expert. Something obviously happened while you were there. I fully understand. Both you and THY have moved on.
Now! Were you a B777 captain while you were there? I guess you were a shorthaul FO. So given a person advice is a bit difficult.
The guys from Dubai that went are still there. The 3 I know from your own country are happy. No one has come back to Dubai. I think one or two went to Abu Dhabi. That is the life of an expat pilot. You go where you are happiest.

I guess the fact that this post doesn't have page after page of ranting and negativity is a very good sign. Had this been an EK post I suspect things would have been a bit different.

I accept that it's not a perfect job, I don't think many are. There are a few things that I am concerned about, the lack of currency fluctuation protection is one of them, but if the 3 or 4 issues can be sorted I think it may be a more coveted position.

Thanks to all.

THY is not really an expat contract. No housing, schooling, or big $, Euro payday.
It is however a very dynamic, rewarding and low stress long haul operation that is a serious alternative to the operators in the Gulf ( most beneficial for European pilots).
The politics of the airline to not really allow for foreign first officers to get ahead at this stage but a few are taking the gamble.
The 8 to 10 day block off really works well and rest days in Istanbul are far less confronting than Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Mumbai. It is only long haul! maybe 3 or 4 turnarounds a year and overtime after 70 hours! No factoring of hours and no restrictions on your days off.

You need to know your ****! Support on the flight deck is non existent from the company. However the aircraft are excellent, fitted out with EFB's and the latest mods. The First Officers have been of a very high standard in line with their experience and the overall cockpit experience is professional and polite.

If you have previously worked outside your own national carrier or enjoy a challenge with not every answer in the book ? It could be a position worth considering.

THY B777 captains who I know who have returned to the gulf have done so due financial security for their families. They have found the same issues of fatigue, lifestyle and micro management unchanged.

The gamble is not so much in the upgrade training to Captain but more, will THY change their upgrade requirements opening it up to foreigners ? Or at least honour their recruitment spiel to those foreigners joining the company as co-pilots. ( and narrow body Captains)

I have no idea as to the likelihood of any of these any of these possibilities

Thanks for the response Fluke.

I've spoken to some chaps that flew as Captains on the B777 for Turkish and all expressed a positive experience. Their concerns were the longevity of the job and the ever changing license requirements.

On paper at the moment Ethiopian seems to be a better deal. 10 days off in a row a month with Business/First Class travel home as well as a fixed US$ salary. (There have been some recent improvements to the contract of late including being paid while on course)

I paid a visit to addis last year to check the place out. Most of the country is beautiful and the people are great. I would advise you though to visit addis before you make it your plan b or A , it is not for everyone.

787 ..if you are form Switzerland I'm for Dyarbakir. Too many 'captain" . No upgrade for expat FO nor for narrow body captains rest assured. The job is temporary whatever you may think or say Fluke..and no stress ? I would say a status of constant astonished stupor in observing the striking contrast from the miserable professional environment and the fact that they really think they know it better.I tried to explain at times but I gave up as no one understood what I was saying and nobody really cared. The right attitude..take your salary..shut up until its safe..look for better...move on. I and many others did.
THY is so attractive that now they are resorting to non rated P2F..
