GEMS Wellington DSO

Hi guys, there was a communication from GEMS stating that all parents to enrol their kids for next year have to submit 2500 aed PER CHILD by end of Feb. I pretty much ignored this thinking we have a debenture or corporate agreement but today was iformed it has to be paid!! It has come from a KHDA document allowing schools to do this....many have not but the GEMS lot have now decided to use it as a means of cash flow for recruiting teachers for next year.....if we leave its gone, if we dont then is gets repaid about october to us. Pretty shabby in my estimation considering that next year in feb when its payable they could hike the fees AFTER we have committed to another year!

Any comments/ideas?

This is the nature of the global private school system I'm afraid. I wonder if the KDHA reached some sort of compromise with regards to capping of yearly fees increases. Our experience of unregulated Asian private schools is 10-20% fees increase each year. At least we don't suffer that...yet.

However and fortunately (so it seems), we moved our kids from DSO last year. having found a not for profit school which is much more suitable for us in all aspects (except the location!).

Yes, the non-profits remain not only the best value, but the best SCHOOLS in the country.

Perhaps some parents should form a board of Govenors and look at starting a new one?
