Yes Flyer the rules are still the same. And although you don't believe me, the medical will still require a pass for both ears.

Hi!

the 30 tons req.
It is not on the website (last I saw), nor are the age limits.

There are probably more restrictions and rules that EK uses for hiring that we don't know about.

Some items are published for all to see, and some are not. They also change, sometimes not infrequently, which is similar to lots of other airlines.

I have posted this question somewhere else, but think I will get much more replies on this thread.

Been offered various interview dates, but my main concern is housing and schools. If I were to join just before summer 2011 is Silicon Valley the most likely place to end up? Are the villas decent size? Most importantly, as I do not wish to give my wife a heart attack driving an hour through Dubai every day, how likely are we to find a decent school with available places for the 2011-2012 school year that is CLOSE to the accommodation with reasonable fees? Examples welcome.

I have read all the negative posts and comments, and am taking this into account. I have 5000 PIC medium jet time, 8000 TT so it really is a difficult decision as I need to think 6-10 years to get a command again. I would do it mostly to get better schools for my kids, while my disposable income will roughly stay the same as with my current LCC job. Although the described fatigue issues concern me a lot.

been almost 2 months since i passed sim ride at EK screening in USA and still no interview in dubai yet. anyone else still waiting?

that being said i am probably going to work for a US based cargo airline that allows home basing in any US city or any international city they serve, but was hoping to check out dubai first and give it a chance... not pleased by the lack of morale at EK.

You'll find out for sure where your accommodation is on the day of joining. Anything before could be changed as accommodation staff is very understaffed and they don't care as long as you get a villa somewhere.

If you opt put of the furniture allowance, you will be put into temporary accommodation for two weeks. If you don't like your assigned accommodation, there's a chance that you might be able to change accommodation, but it's dependendant on availability.

If you have a job in a UK LCC why would you want to come here?
Don't come for the big airplane.
Villa's - anyones guess, generally DSO , DSO2 or the place behind AR, All are a good size.
If you were joining now Airbus might be the better fleet, 10 year plan@ 150 airbus and 100 777, now@ 100 777 and 50 Airbus
Please do you homework before coming and be honest with family, worst thing is packing up family to more here and then the family does not like what they see.
Most schools are good and more in the works, but plan on driving( wife most of the time) an hour 2 times a day (min), I would never put my kids on a Dubai school bus ( but that is me)

Hi guys. Besides the minimum hours, time in type and the 30 tons rule, do they use any other criteria to call people for the interview? For example, are single guys preferred to married guys who have kids? My question arises because I have been shortlisted twice in the past 15 months but I was never called for an interview, meanwhile a friend of mine (single) applied in June and interviewed in November and a friend of a friend interviewed within 4 weeks of applying in 2010 (married, no kids). Just a little thought I had on why I don't get called to interview. thanks!

FATBUS, I am considering leaving my current LCC job as I am getting bored with the lack of routes and the short flights most of the times. Also, we have lived as expats for the last 15 years in non-expat areas and have never fitted in anywhere, and living in Dubai we would finally fit it among all the other international families! Currently on Euro contract in France, changing base to the UK would mean a big pay cut, but schools in France and the education system really suck! So joining EK would mean better and British schools for kids, longer and fewer sectors (more jetlag, I know) and the wife I know would be happier at the pool, mall and with a full time nanny. However, the long-term fatigue, lack of rights, pay cut for me and the huge amount of unknowns / pot luck (such as accommodation and time to command) are the other side of the coin. Thought the staff travel would be a bonus, but there is no way I am traveling long distances for vacations with the family in economy. Can you buy firm business seats for family with kids (ID50's)?

Any more input would be great.

tickets, villas, school bus

ID TICKETS

Vacation with kids on discounted tickets?! Good luck with that! All the flights are always full! Your kids go to school, right? So, you would go for vacation during school holidays. Forget about that!

Be happy if you get on the flight to your home country and back with your Annual Leave Ticket!

Answer to the question: yes, you and your immadiate family members are eligible for Business Class id tickets. A captain and his family can travel in First Class.

You can buy firm tickets but if the flights are overbooked (many times they are), the system will not allow you to order them. You can be off-lodaded with those tickets as well. (Actually, even with Annual Leave Ticket, it happened before.)

If you are from the other side of the globe (Americas, Australia, NZ), going home might be a nightmare on id/flyzed tickets.

If you are from the UK or Europe, you will always manage to go home somehow. (I know European guys who go home almost every month!) It's difficult sometimes but managable.

(You will be able to use your Annual Leave Ticket for your vacation destination later in the future.)

Flyzed tickets for relatives: only on Qatar, BA and Turkish Airlines. Self can use many other airlines.

VILLAS

Villas are actually pretty and big. Silicon Oasis I. is beautiful! Silicon II. will get better with time. I really like the villas in Garhoud and in Jumeira.

The only area which I didn't like: the new villas in Al Barsha. It's a 20-minute-drive to the desert from the Emirates Mall. Taxis don't even go there. (Some call it "Area 51".) Beside the villa I've seen has only 3 bedrooms and two of those are very small. However, there was a huge empty space upstairs like a second living-room.

Some villas have 3, some have 4 bedrooms. Some villas have the maid's room with a seperate entrance behind the house, some villas have the maid's room inside the house.

Remember, if the garden is not done by a previous owner, you have to do it, too which costs lots of money. (Maybe around 20,000 dhs but I'm not sure. Our garden was done.)

You need enormous LUCK to get a super great villa! However, you shouldn't be worried, hopefully you'll get something what you like. Actually, it's more important what your wife likes... (That's my impression from all the stories I'm hearing.)

Note: Many single guys take the living-out allowance nowadays, move out and rent an apartment. Lots of nice condos are on the market for a good price.

SCHOOL BUS

What's wrong with the school bus? It's a huge, yellow bus for God's sake! The kids have pretty good chances for survival...

I have friends living in Arabian Ranches (which is also far from "the city", practically in the desert), their kids are 10 and 13, they get picked up by the school bus every day. They are alive so far. (The wife doesn't even have a driving licence and they've been in Dubai for 6 years...) The kids are quite independent, they use taxis when necessary.

SCHOOLS

Fees vary. It depends how long the term is and which school you choose. (DESS, Dubai English Speaking School: 27,000 dhs.)

- Some schools are much more expensive! You can pay up to 45,000 dhs for a term. -

Even though Emirates pilots have prioriy on the waiting lists at some of the schools, there is no guarantee you can make it if you put the kids on the list so late. (In the summer.)

Jan Interview

hi, i am on the interview list for january, 2011.
initially i thought an airline major like emirates is big deal.
but after going through some posts, i am having second thoughts.
i have heard that f/o pay will barely cover living expenses, no savings
upgrades will take years.
a lot of adjustment required especially for wife and kid.
currently in command at an LCC.
request advice from some senior pilots on way ahead regarding professional life,
family life, expenses, and general pros and cons of emirates life.
thanks in advance

i will appreciate some info i can use.
nobody said that my decision is based on pprune posts, but it does help to

2. approximate living expenses for average US style living
3. whether pilot wives can work
4. average amount of time spent with family
5. medical facilities in UAE
6. a lot has been said about kid's education but none so specific so as to give approximate expense involved

Hi!

Airflirt:
I did the expat thing, but not at EK. With my airline we fly there pretty often.

Bottom Line: U do not want to leave a US LCC command to come to EK.

Exceptions:
Do you and your family want a BIG ADVENTURE...and realize that BAs don't always mean great fun....it may be a big shock and too much stress. If you WANT a BA, then you may want to go.
Do you and your family specifically want to live in DXB?
Do you want to fly a widebody, and your family doesn't care where they live?
Do you want your family to live/go to school overseas for a specific reason, and you are willing to put up with the negatives at EK?
I know a number of people who are/were at EK. Some hated it, some tolerate it, some like it a lot. Recently flew on EK and both pilots seemed pretty content.

Good luck, and God Bless!
Whether you stay at LCC or go to EK, it will work out, Inshallah

Emirates (EK) Interview - all you need to know about it (threads merged)

Hey everyone

I am currently flying a CRJ in Canada for Jazz. I have an Emitates interview coming up and had a few questions about the job.

I currently work 16-18 days a month doing on average 10-13 hour duty days with up to 5-6 sectors a day.

I was wondering

1. Is it all going to be airbus 330?

2. If you want to do single day flying to be home at some point during the day is that a difficult prospect.

3. How many sectors a day can one plan on doing.

4. How long is the longest pairing on the 330 and the 777

5. During the road show they said there are other positions like sim, pilot recruitment and CRM. How long does it take for something like that?

6. I am new to the long haul world but how many flight deck crew are on board and at what trip time do they add the extra pilot?

7. As an FO do you do operatation and augmentation sectors?

8. If you do a short sector like a Doha turn will the then add another turn?

9. If you do a seven years EK tour and live a modest life style how much could one save?

10. How often can one make it to there home can you ask to have days off in big groups an travel home every three to four months?

Pardon my troubles. I am currently 8-10 years away from a CRJ or Dash 8 command. We do have pretty easy flying like not to many starts before 4 am and not much night flying but 8 more years to a command is taxing when it's for a dash 8

Thanks
