Anxiety/OCD & Initial Class 1 Medical

Hi folks. I live in Ireland and intend to go for my Class 1 medical in the very near future. I'm a little worried however as I have suffered from contamination OCD in the past & I'm wondering if this will count against me. I think we all have a little bit of anxiety to a certain extent, but mine was overly elevated. I've managed to get it down to a more normal level now with the help of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Does anyone know - if I fail the medical in Ireland, is there an appeals process similar to the UK's (which looks pretty thorough)?

Also, if I do fail in Ireland, is it possible to get another Class 1 medical examination done in another EU state?

Many thanks for any advice everyone.

You will need to declare this condition filling out the medical application form.
EASA standards should be identical.
Should you fail in one state, you will need to declare it in the next one on the form.
Failure to declare is a criminal offence.
Why not apply to Gatwick in the first place?
You will undoubtedly be referred to a specialist to assess you.

There are threads on this medical section about exactly what conditions are/ are not acceptable.

ABOVE ALL, BE HONEST

OCD

CBT or some other similar therapy is a good idea. Don't know about the IAA but the CAA would want you to see one of their psychiatrists but OCD shouldn't rule you out as long as you are open about it and it is not too disabling.

I thought it was the norm that all pilots have obsessive compulsive disorder.

Surely that should read, 'Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder'.

I refuse to dignify it with capitals. It's one of the new disorders that didn't exist before the latter half of the 20th century.

Many thanks parkfell and Jodelophile for your advice. If any one else has any other helpful information I'd be very grateful if you could post it here or else private message me. Especially if any one knows the specific situation re the IAA and appealing a failed medical. Thanks.

I have the exact same worry mate. I'm going to get mine done in the UK next month and I worry in case I get knocked back. I've been off all treatment for 19 months and was discharged in August last year so I hope that will help out.

Hey guys I know there has not been a reply to this thread in a while, in fact ages, but said I would just add that a friend of mine just got declined a class 1 Irish Med about a year ago due to OCD alone. Don't know if there is any appeals. Can someone shed light on that?
She did not have bad OCD at all in fact it was very mild. Is this very unfair to disqualify someone for this alone, just seems very harsh as OCD is such a broad illness? Can she do it anywhere else or what should I advise her?
EZY FR did u get your Med accepted in the U.K.?
Flyingnewbie did you find out anything about appeals process? PM me if you wish

Mild OCD should not exclude a Class 1. Worth trying to appeal, I do not know what the IAA process is.

FlyingNewbie .... There is a similar thread on here regarding someone else with mild depresision and an intial class one. As someone else said be honest and be yourself. I would add that the AME will have access to your medical reports, so I think it might be easier to do your class one in Ireland, if that is where you medical records are.

I think there are only two IAA medical examiners in Ireland, the senior one (TG), if that is your AME, if not request him, he is an ex GP, surgeon and Ryanair Captain. top bloke and I am sure he will work with you rather than against you, it is not a case pass of fail, he will need probably need in your medical notes to make further enquiries.

I feel sure he would be fair and honest, as an ATPL, to any problems you might have in the future in relations to psycholological issues, and your prospects for the future.

PM if you want his name.
