Sailonline racing Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2017

AHOY ALL sailing members of PPRuNe.... Sailonline is about to host a virtual version of a race that it is associated with in reality and which will race, in reality, next year from Melbourne to Osaka. Sailonline has been linked with this upcoming 2018 event since early 2016 and, as you can see, this time Sailonline's marketing guy in Australia has bagged the podium three some prizes from Gill Australia.

I will be keeping an eye out for our PPRuNe Flotilla regulars and as I see boats register will add the PRU_ prefix to boatnames.

This could be an awesome race, so please do all spread the word!

Here's the full info:

Sailonline.org is pleased to team with the organising authority of the
Melbourne to Osaka Double-Handed Yacht Race 2018 to bring to prospective entrants and armchair navigators, our 2017 'Prelude 2' of the real race. The lucky podium place-takers of the Sailonline virtual race will each win a prize supplied by Gill Australiaas follows:

With Sailonline's almost real time weather downloads from NOAA, this is intended to give prospective entrants in the real race a great opportunity to test their weather navigation skills. The 'Prelude' is timed to run at the same time of the year as the real race so weather patterns may be similar.

The Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race is a 5,500 nautical mile 2 handed yacht race - one of the longest two handed yacht races in the world and the only one running from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere. It encounters multiple weather systems and seasons as it crosses the Pacific ocean. The course takes the competitors into Bass Strait, up the east coast of Australia into the southeast tradewinds then through the doldrums on the equator. It then heads into the northeast tradewinds to the finish in the port of Osaka.

The race, first held in 1987 to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the opening of the Port of Osaka, is held approx. every four years to celebrate the City of Melbourne and the City of Osaka sister city relationship. The 2018 event coincides with the 40th anniversary of this relationship and is a collaborative effort of three yacht clubs:

Sandringham Yacht Club - the Melbourne Host
Ocean Racing Club of Victoria - administering the on-water activities, and
Osaka Hokko Yacht Club - the Osaka Host

For the virtual 2017 M2O Prelude 2, Sailonline will be using the polar of a Class 40 yacht. Melbourne yacht 'Lord Jiminy' is a Class 40 and is already entered in the 2018 event. 'Lord Jiminy' and 'Nexba' are the 2 currently entered Class 40 yachts but two more are expected to enter the race.

The Sailonline race opened for pre-race practice at 2200utc on 28 March 2017 and the race itself starts on 1 April at 2200utc.

To join the free-to-play sailing navsim game at Sailonline just click on this button:

Sailonline is a global, realistic wind sailing navsim that interacts well with routing software, in the same way as you would connect to a router when navigating a real yacht, and otherwise will teach you techniques of reading winds and how the performance polars of each boat-type needs to be well understood to obtain best results.

Sailonline buddies with many real yacht races/clubs around the world and its Race Committee produces a quarterly calendar of excellent competitive racing catering for those who prefer ocean events, or offshore races, or even hand-on-the-tiller sprints!

Here is the Calendar for Q2:

Racing as part of the PRU_ flotilla doesn't impact negatively on your rankings (if you support Sailonline as an SYC member) so you still log in with your usual username and password. The PRU_ prefix just applies to the boat in the race in question.

I'm going to try this one, so if a larger flotilla will intimidate the opposition, I'd better join if I may?

Excellent.. boguing please register in the race and I can then add the PRU_ prefix (I am a Sailonline OPS Admin). Once done, it takes up to 30mins or so to take effect as it has to populate the internet and is reliant on how quickly ISPs refresh their caches :-)

Wodrick

I think there probably should - juggling health with Sailonline and other stuff has kept me a tad preoccupied.

I shall "make it so" right away :-D AND then make a new post.. after all.. it IS a series :-D

It is a moveable feast - since Parkinson's was ruled out 2yrs ago after a nuclear brain scan and I came off the drugs (took 6 months of writhing weirdness) all hell has broken loose with my autonomic system... the wild world of "system malfunction" is now my daily experience, along with most of the neuro symptoms I've had since 2006. No-one apart from my GP is particularly interested, I see specialists once/twice a year but it's a mystery and there's no motivation to solve it thanks to #NHS underfunding and understaffing. I've a minor op pending (on an #NHS waiting list) but its not urgent to anyone other than me ... so still mostly housebound!

Thanks for asking :-)

BTW my website and linked blog are updated from time to time ... and I can be found shouting about causes that matter to me on Twitter (@joannekarma), of course! :-D

I thought I counted 9 but I'm not the best counter when 5 fingers are occupied with the glass.

Current Ranking... not sure this will change much before race close! Bravooo guys :-)

Sorry about the images and visibility - I have to chop/change so much with Google images (successor to Picasa which used to be brilliant)... I will try and post two images and maybe you can tell me if you all see all of them! One version I sometimes see as broken <eyeroll>!
