The times they are a changing!

Pull up at the house and 2 LAPD officers are getting out of their patrol car, they ask me if I'm the caller and do I live here? to which I reply no and yes and enquire as to the problem. They explain that they've received a call about a white man with dreadlocks (obviously my 20 year old son) firing a gun. I suggest we go into the back yard and check it out and as he is a good sensible kid they'll be no need to have guns drawn as we don't want any accidents. Upon reaching the backyard my son has set up targets on the garage wall and is practice shooting with a newly bought high powered air gun. I suspect he's going to get arrested if not for the firing a weapon then definitely for the array of bongs, grinders , rolling papers and multiple bags of marijuana on full display on the patio table next to the gun right in front of the cops. The officers to my utter astonishment strike up a jovial conversation with him after inspecting the gun and ask him how his marksmanship is, he gives them a display by blasting hell out of a coke can, they then enter into a discussion about the best guns, places to buy them and local gun ranges. After an exchange of pleasantries, apologies for interrupting and handshakes and smiles all round they leave . I go nuts and tell him he's lucky he's not getting arrested, if not for the shooting then for having a collection of grass and paraphernalia that would make Pablo Escobar blush. He looks at me dismissively and says "firing guns and the drugs are all perfectly legal, but thank f**k they didn't see my bottle of beer"

So to summarize, guns and marijuana no problem, Budweiser would have been an arrest-able offense.

California legalized marijuana use, medically some time ago, and just this year, recreationally, as I am sure you are aware. Firing an air rifle may be legal, but for most municipalities across the US, discharging a firearm within city limits is not kosher and could land one on the wrong side of the law.

I take it your son's heritage is not Latino nor African American.

Quite. Sounds like you have raised a fine boy.

I certainly agree with you on our outdated legal restrictions on alcohol consumption and the lack thereof regarding firearms.

College 4 days a week, work the other 3 days and 2 evenings for minimum wage, his first day off in the month, donates to charity, helps people, musician, vegan , non smoker (tobacco), loves animals, gym first thing in the morning, does all his beer drinking and Mary Jane with mates in the safety of the back yard crash pad. Hates drink drivers and lectures his mates to never do it. Extremely proud of him. Oh and a big Bob Marley fan, so much so he informed me and his mom when he was 16 he had saved up and bought a ticket to Jamaica and rented a hut in the jungle for 2 months and was leaving in a weeks time. Sat around playing his guitar eating fried bananas and getting twisted. Was the making of him.

I would not have thought that an air rifle was a fire arm - because there is no fire involved?

Probably plantains rather than bananas - they look pretty much the same but are completely tasteless, which is why you have to fry them.

My lad got the best part of a year in Jamaican jungles so we went out to visit him, and got to see rather more of village life than the average tourist who rarely gets past the armed guards, who are there to see that the punters don't escape from their prison camps (aka "all inclusive resorts").

Technically, yes, but in the legal sense it's what some thick polly has decided it will be. So, for example, here in the UK an air weapon (rifle or pistol) becomes a firearm, necessitating a licence, when over a certain power. This licence is harder to get than one for an arguably more lethal shotgun.

As no alcohol would be involved, I rather doubt it. To recycle an old joke, Bud is like making love in a canoe. It's f***ing close to water.

Nice to hear and very much my own experience of dealing with law enforcement officers.

Though I too can't help feel that things may have been a tad different had your place been on another side of town and the players slightly less visible after sunset.

They do vary. Round our way, our lads were sitting around with their mates in a park, aged 15 or so, cans of (illegal) beer all over the place. Police wander up for a chat: "all right lads?". Police ignore the illegal drink. After a bit, as they're leaving, the police tell the lads to be careful about their bicycles, which are scattered around the outside of the group, where anyone could grab one and ride off.

This is deliberate policy. The police know that 15yo boys are going to drink, whatever they do, and that having them do so in a city centre park makes it much easier for them (the police) to look after them (the kids) than if they scattered them to a multitude of bits of waste ground hidden behind garage blocks in the suburbs.

On the other hand, when the kids took the same attitude of friendly banter with the guys policing the Reading Festival it didn't go down at all well - different places, different customs. Policing Reading Festival is, no doubt, a little more challenging, and some of the lads may be not quite so harmless.

The former is an exercise in gaining the respect of the 'residents', whereas the latter is intended to establish who is in charge and stress that they will not stand for any nonsense.

Somewhere on youtube is a clip about the Czechs (worlds No 1 beer drinkers) re cycling beer. What goes into the human body is good Czech beer what comes out is recycled and labelled Bud light.

probably part of the long standing battle over the Budweiser name -the American Brand vs the Czech Brewery of same name.
