What would YOU take?

You've got the chance to go back to the stone age in a time machine. What hand-portable modern device would you take back with you to astound the natives (and probably change the course of human history!)?

My choice? Probably an illustrated book about the things in modern life that we rely upon nowadays.

A bolt action rifle (and of course ammunition).

Food gathering and making it easier - status within the group
Protection and protecting others from attacks by others - status within the group
Makes one powerful in the eyes of others - Leader
Provides a method of making instant fire - status within the group

Dunny paper. As well as the thermos

And a shovel. I mean, imagine being stuck in prehistory, surrounded by troglodytes, and not having a shovel??

The bolt action rifle is an obvious choice - but only if accompanied by a couple of 1,000 round boxes of ammunition.

Shirley a decent crossbow would be more useful than a rifle. It may not have the range, or the noise, but a readily available source of ammunition and the ability to kill food/enemies to help you gain "leader" status would surely be just as advantageous.....

Either that or you need the rifle, a large supply of cleaning material (you would use a weapon that has been fired a hundred times without being cleaned?) and at least a pallet of ammo. I would also throw in a zippo with a couple of cases of fuel (for the obvious fire bit) and a stinkload of good Chinese toilet crackers that can be stripped and turned into IED's that can be used for offence or defence.

And cludgie paper. Lots of cludgie paper. There are some places you don't want to suddenly become allergic to the local flora.

But where would we get the bacon, not sure I could survive without bacon...........

A small sum of money and open a bank account, six thousand years of interest is not to be sneezed at.

My laptop, so I could connect to the internet......

Seriously though, how does the thermos know if it needs to keep the contents hot or cold?

More and more I'm convinced we should make this a bus trip. Everyone gets to bring their suggestions (subject to freight weight limits). Drapes for courier. It's sisemen's idea, so he gets to drive.

Weapons (personal weapons, don't get carried away) don't count as freight; neither do prophylactics, personal medicines, drugs, cameras, binoculars, phrase books, or other essential equipment.

I'm quite pumped! When do we leave?

So a tank doesn't count? And we'll need WAY more than one "bus" since we'll need at least one for carrying fuel UNLESS we get them converted to work off of wood gas and then we can use a setup similar to

Arrows (quarrels if you're picky) my bum. Having been on a survival course and tasked to make a bow and arrow set, I know I'll take the gun and 20 rounds!
