Why don't airliners have windows you can open...?

I'm the first one?

Couldn't find it so assuming I am I will award myself a cookie

Here are a few links on the above but just do the search by yourself.
Mitt Romney Wonders Why Ann Romney's Airplane Windows Don't Roll Down
Mitt Romney wants to know why airplane windows do not open - ComPost - The Washington Post

For those too lazy to click the links, Mitt Romney (Republican candidate for the upcoming USA presidential elections) just wondered/complained that you can't open the windows on a plane so in case of cabin smoke you can not get oxygen from outside...

Meh, I'm no american so I won't be able to vote but I sure do have an opinion ...

The funny bit is that most of us know that aircraft windows don't roll down, but we aren't worth 250 million, whereas Mr Romney is.

So my question is - who is more stupid, Mr Romney, or the rest of us?

Or, to put it another way, who would be so stupid as to believe such stories published in the press during an election year...???

Romney ain’t really human. He’s an escaped mannequin from the Future Hall of Wanabee Presidents from Disney World.

Someone who was at the event reported that the aside was made with an obviously sardonic/ironic tone. Given that irony is an extinct species in the USA, it's no surprise that his statement was taken at face value.
(And you have NO IDEA just how much it irks me to give Romney the benefit of the doubt...)

CORRECTION:
I've seen the clip. He wasn't joking. I can take it all back. Bloody hell.....

Yeah, I'm afraid that all the evidence suggests he was actually serious.

Cripes.

Edit: Actually having seen the video now, it's not entirely obvious whether he was serious or not. It was pretty rambling in general.

Telegraph article
Oh dear oh dear oh dear...I don't know which aspect of this is more lamentable:

1. Romney has inadvertently painted a searing indictment of science education in the USA.
2. He may soon be (but hopefully not) in a position of authority over thousands of US military aircraft with...non-opening windows.
3. Many honest and decent republicans will looking at each other and saying "is this the BEST we could come up with to challenge Obama?!"

It's a practical question. I have often wondered why submarines, for example, don't have screen doors.

Even if he was to win, those days are long gone. An image of a paper bag comes to mind.

It's a dark, dark day when a politician can't make a joke without it being misinterpreted and lambasted in the press and self-righteous ppruners feel that they have to be the first to start off a thread poking a big stick in their direction.

FFS lighten up people and get a life.
