Berlin Tempelhof

Just seen the plans to turn the old berlin Tempelhof airport into a public park. Apparently they will preserve the runways.

Just a shame they cant preserve it in a state where it could occasionally be used as an airport for airshows, aviation trade fairs etc.

How that airfield was never kept as GA only, at least, is a scandal. Some facilities should be safe from change imo, and it's not as if the Berliners are short of green space is it ?

Why would anyone go to an aviation trade fair at an airport that no-one can fly into, when a brand new expo centre - directly linked to the runway - has just opened right next to Schonefeld (and the new Brandenburg) airport.

Thumbs down

I was at a "save the airport" event and concert at Tempelhof and although the mayor made every effort to make it seem like it was closing for the benefit of the neighbourhood, none of the "neighbours" were fooled.
The man is a fool, the process of a local politician closing national infrastructure and getting away with it (like that criminal Mayor Daley and Meigs Field in Chicago) boggles the mind.
That national authorities permit this behaviour that forever removes a facility long after the flash-in-pan of a mayor is a scandal. Then there are the national authorities in Norway who closed Fornebu, opened the new airport in the foggiest place they could find, with no viable alternate. I guess they win the scandel award in gold.

Doesn't that suggest there was no alternate for Fornebu either...?
