For the sake of accuracy, Scotch is a whisky.

For the sake of accuracy.........

Scotch (adj.)

"of Scotland," 1590s, contraction of Scottish. Disdained by the Scottish because of the many insulting and pejorative formations made from it by the English (e.g. Scotch attorney, a Jamaica term from 1864 for strangler vines). As a noun, elliptical for Scotch whisky, it is attested from 1778. Scotch-Irish is from 1876; more properly Scots-Irish (1972), from Scots (mid-14c.), the older adj., which is from Scottis, the northern variant of Scottish. Scotch Tape was said to be so called because at first it had adhesive only on the edges (to make it easier to remove as a masking tape in car paint jobs), which was interpreted as a sign of cheapness on the part of the manufacturers.

For further accuracy:

The Lawn Tennis Association is funded primarily from the income from Wimbledon, plus commercial sponsors with some funding coming from Sport England who CUT their contribution. Sport England is itself primarily funded from the Lottery, not from taxes.

Remind me why Scots should be grateful?

He pays his taxes to the Exchequer so England should be grateful.

Incidentally, I must suggest to a urologist mate of mine that he nicknames impotence "a case of the Henmans" i.e. someone who is never able to make it past a semi.

If seems as though Hakkasan stood Murray and his mates to $5,448 dinner and only hit him with the 20% service charge.
That was decent of them if it is correct but I don't see that anyone's pointed that out yet which is probably a shame for the generous management at HAKKASAN.

And the award for the most defensive posts on a Jetblast thread ever goes to....this thread!

He come across on the media as a miserable git. He is in line to make millions thanks to media coverage. Maybe he should start improving his media image...

Chips, if I seem defensive it is because it is about a family I personally know.

I know Andy isn't as he is portrayed on tv, and from my own experience it is not always easy to come across well - even with training.

He already makes this anyway and pretty much refused to get into the product endorsement beloved by others.

He doesn't want media bigging him up and then destroying him so ignores them.

The bitterness and envy manifest on this thread does some contributors little credit.

This young man has worked for this achievement at an intensity that few of us could ever have contemplated in an era generally recognised to be the best ever in men's tennis. Some of us prefer his honesty to the glib PR image that apparently is nowadays considered essential to success.

He has paid a penalty for so many failing to understand that there is a fundamental difference between English and Scottish (very dry) sense of humour.

Why can we not enjoy his success rather than pillorying him for failing to live up to the good old British stereotype of, "Try, Try, Try again - and then give up?"
