North/South Korean Olympic Flags

So the Olympics has started with a blast with the North Korean football teams profiles being shown on the Big screen with each of the players shown with a South Korean flag besides the players, they refused to play until they got an apololgy from the Committee.

We havn`t had the opening and there`s been a screw up !!!

You'd have to wonder if it was deliberate, either a) a silly joke or b) sanctioned to irritate/humiliate from behind the curtain......?

From a good distance it was rather funny though.

There are precedents for this. Recently the obscene and demeaning 'Borat' version of the Kazakhstan anthem was played at a sporting event instead of the real one.

The words 'piss up' and 'brewery' come to mind somehow...

I recall there being a fairly prominent article in the online edition of the Grauniad last week on how the organizers were training all and sundry not to "hang flags upside down" and on how not to play the wrong anthems.

Obviously, they forgot to teach them how to pick the right flags before hanging them upside down.

Perhaps, of course, the organizers were betting on the DPRK being no longer in existence when the Olympics were scheduled to kick off, so they left them out of the training manual.

More or less identical event many years ago when East Germany was divided from West, someone got their DDR and GDR mixed up and the East got the Western anthem!

Getting the national anthem is somehow understandable, though amateurish, but to get a simple visual image wrong at this level of international relations is nothing short of laughable.

Oh Picky! Picky!

Let all loyal Brits and, more widely, all admrers of the Olympic spirit, revel that no really foul offence was committed, such as breach of Olympic copyright.

You have glimpsed the future - it will get worse in years to come. Reading those news banners on TV is an indication that not only does no-one care whether it is actually correct, but no-one knows it's incorrect ...

German Democratic Republic = Deutsche Demokratische Republikl - ITYM BRD aka West Germany.

Easy mistake to make, the DDR flad just some randon junk splattered on it. Now, the old Imperial German flag - that was a man's flag. Nice bold colours and you could make the Maltese cross.

I presume that the chap who sorted out the flags will be the Independent Scottish foreign minister.
