According to reports it was a strike-slip which produced little in the way of a tsunami (waves < 1m). Seems like a good test for the warning system which is reported to have worked well. Very fortunate for all concerned. This is reported as one of the largest quakes ever recorded not occurring on the edge of a continental plate (although it looks pretty close).
The early warning system seems to have been a great success, except for a few foreign tourists that refused to leave their beachfront chalets, which is causing the Thai authorities to rethink things. I think it's easy, arm the Fuzz with a form in the major languages stating they are willing to take their chances and they absolve the Governemnt (in absentia, if necessary) of any wrongdoing and from any claims in the event of death or damages. Sign it and enjoy the sun, refuse and leave, in handcuffs if needs be.

If you think you are going to ever successfully claim against the Thai authorities for anything - think again

PNG is my bet for the next big one.
Bugger! 1800km out. Still it was only a 6.5

A strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the South Pacific island of Vanuatu on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said, but there was no tsunami warning.
Agreed, but then their families will get on the lawsuit bandwagon because their dearest got buried alive and no amount of "they refused to leave" will stop them, so to save the stupid from themselves, I suggested that.
