I know there are Jack Russell fanciers on JB so here's my mate's dogs, Lucie and Buster giving a left-paw salute. And no, this photo wasn't 'shopped, it's the real thing.
OFSO - what was the appeasement you are so obvioudly tempting them with?
Not me, TBird, these dogs are Scottish residents, from whence I received the photograph by e-mail. They were here in Spain on a visit a couple of years ago, though, so I have met them.
Have a cat who behaves EXACTLY like those two Jacks, always the left paw up and ready to pounce when you throw whatever you have that he wants across the room (so he can bring it back for you to throw again)....
I'm sure he's confused about what kind of animal he is.
A friend has a Jack Russell. I knocked on the front door one day, and hearing no answer, opened the flyscreen door and leant in, calling out.
The response was quite violent, on a small scale. The Jack Russell had me by one shoelace, and growling fiercely, was trying to drag me out of the premises.
Ach, Russells! If we didn't have a dachs (my favorite breed) and a lab and a German shepherd, and if the Tibetian mastiff weren't the next in line (but they eat peas and tulips, with bulbs... come to think of it, the dachs and lab do, too... just the dachs does not eat the bulbs...), I'd get a Russell tomorrow. I've seen one trying to catch a squirrel and actually climbing half-way up the tree. Obviously he wasn't sure of what animal he was either.
Lady in the village has two similar Jack Russells. When she goes into the supermarket, she ties them up outside. When approached, one will happily accept attention and be stroked, whilst the other will attack without warning - and I mean without warning. I consider myself to be a pretty good judge of doggie body language, but this little buggah shows no signs until it's too late when it attacks and will bite. Shame really.
My JR/Chihuahua cross still has the brain and scrapping instinct of a pure JR. Problem is the Chihuahua instinct takes over a bit late in the day! She "points" like a JR though.
