Vettel/ Hamilton incident according to Jackie Stewart....
"The reason that it happened was that Lewis either lifted off completely from the gas pedal or brushed the brakes at a time when no racing driver behind the leader would have expected anybody to do that it.
"Vettel, even with the fast reactions of an F1 world champion of four times, still ran into the back of Lewis, not by any intention at all, but by the fact that it was such a severe retardation while he, and every other driver for that matter, was ready to accelerate down the straight because the pace car had already disappeared."

Jackie Stewart has always for some reason (maybe it's because he can't stand blokes wearing ear studs and bling) expressed negative views on Hamilton.

The telemetry clearly shows he is simply wrong (a) about the 'brushing the brakes'; and (b) the safety car is clearly visible ahead in the video at the point where Vettel hit him the first time (it hasn't disappeared). At that point in the procedure, the lead car 'may increase his distance from the safety car to more than 10 car lengths'. That's so he doesn't overtake it when he accelerates and gets a penalty. Hamilton did exactly what is expected when the safety car lights go out, he opened up a gap to it.

'Alternative facts' are clearly not just a White House phenomenon.

As someone has said before: you are entitled to your own opinion but you are not entitled to your own facts.

Or is Sir J disputing the FIA telemetry?

That quote earlier missed the first part of SJS's comment which kind of balances it a little:
“There is no doubt in my opinion that Vettel was completely wrong, I mean, irresponsible in colliding with Lewis,” Stewart told Motorsport.tv’s The Flying Lap.

“Whether that was a moment of anger, or whatever it may have been, it was still not correct." [I'm pretty sure he's referring to the second contact here but I would use the word ramming rather than collision!]

He then makes the statement shown in Simplythebeast's post.

Whatever SJS's history, he was 100% wrong on the second part.

It is bewildering that a driver can deliberately collide with his title rival - behind the safety car - and effectively get away with a 10 sec stop-go.

Despite evidence to the contrary, Villeneuve, Ecclestone and Stewart all blamed Hamilton to some degree for the Baku incident. I wonder if they will also be 'apologising to Lewis directly' as Vettel has now done?

And what would Seb's 'further punishment' have been if they'd locked wheels and both gone off the track? Are they suggesting that Seb's collision was so deliberate as to be so precise as to be forgivable?
There's F1 and there's DTM. The odd tap into a corner is not uncommon, but at slow speed on a straight, even that would bring out the wrath of the stewards.

Low speed touching of wheels due to an element of road age from a four time champion against a three time champion who believes he can do no wrong. No harm done, correct penalty, move on to the next race.

I notice that the Beeb are reporting that Silverstone wants to end its current contract in 2019 due in part that Bernie pushed them into the 2010 deal which included a 5% escalator clause. No doubt Afghanistan, Colombia or Nigeria are ready to offer a deal to replace the home of British Motor Racing !

So an imperious grand-slam from Hamilton, a corker of a recovery drive from Bottas (and also from Ricciardo), some entertaining racing from Verstappen and the championship back to within a point.

Wonder who will lead at the summer break...
