As i was trawling the morning papers online, i came across this and thought that it was sufficiently weird and wonderful to warrant a thread here for the perusal of the one mind of PPRuNe.

Any ideas ? Balloons ? I suppose if they floated in the direction of the prevailing wind we could rule out little green men

Other witnesses said the sighting was a ‘real Superman moment’, after the comic book hero who lived in New York.

Ere I think the citizen of Metropolis will be a tad ticked orf at this news,
Anyway I though NYC was surround by legions of F16s with steelyeyed fighter jocks sat within ready to bound skyward in a trice? how come they weren't scrambled?

They could have been El Queda goatskin balloon bombs,the Japanese tried it on with Balloon Bombs you know.

Apparently it was kept secret that they were actually reaching the States and causing considerable damage to forests. The Japanese, believing them to be a failure, then gave up.

One of them killed a number of people having a picknick,not by direct hit,if I remember correctly they found the payload in the woods and started tampering with it, I believe they were the only casualties of the Japanese Balloon Bombs.

The title of this thread needs to be corrected.
The name of the place is Nu Yawk.
I've even seen it on an automobile license plate.
Note the "s" in "license", since it was a US plate.

"A whole city saw it, yet nobody managed to get a decent photo!"

Isn't this always the case!
And one guy even said he was watching it for 2 hours.

I stand corrected sir! Interestingly you don't hear many people speaking with a Nu Yawk accent these days, say in comparison to 20 years ago. I believe that there is an on-going project to immortalise said accent before it dies out by some language scholars in NYC

Back to the lights and people's reactions, it is kind of strange that so few photos have appeared thus far, especially from free-lance paps who are constantly in search of photographic payola on the streets of the city....
