Acts from the 80s, who are cool (again).

(Roj, thats the 1980s mate )

This is a self indulgent odyssey - forgive me. Which acts have stood the 25 year test of time?

For starters, let me offer Simple Minds. Forever the whipping boys to U2, they did some great stuff. Tears for Fears too, haven't they stood the test of time well and I am only now, less than uneasy about allowing my offspring sift through pop's CD collection.

YouTube - Simple Minds - New Gold Dream (Maxi) 12"

YouTube - Tears For Fears - Head Over Heels: Video

YouTube - The Adventures - Broken Land

.. and perhaps the most under rated band of the lot?

YouTube - Talk Talk - Life's What You Make It

YouTube - Talk Talk - LIVING IN ANOTHER WORLD - 1986

.. well, perhaps not all the collection is available for scrutiny - not just yet.

YouTube - If you were here tonight-Alexander O'neal

YouTube - A Flock Of Seagulls - I Ran

Drifting off thread before the thread even starts, didn't U2 do some fabulous stuff?

YouTube - Bad - U2

YouTube - U2 - The Unforgettable Fire: Video

YouTube - U2 - Lemon

YouTube - U2 - Sweetest Thing: Video

YouTube - U2 - All I Want Is You: Video

Bono's preamble at the start of this puts the track in a wider context.

YouTube - Sunday Bloody Sunday

I was in the crowd at Run DMC's first ever UK gig, at the Electric Ballroom in Camden in 1984. Therefore, by extension, I'm cool.

Sprogget,

With a mug of cocoa in my hand, on my father's lap, I watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon. That doesn't make me an astronaut.

One of the best songs of the 80s. Although, not cool. Yet. But it will be.

Maybe.

YouTube - Don Henley ? The Boys Of Summer ? ?HD16:9?

Pah! Bearing in mind the thread title, Don Henley was only ever cool for four or five years up until '76 at best & certainly not after punk. That eighties schtick was strictly for spotty youths who are no longer youths but still spotty and have well worn copies of Top Gun, Days of Thunder & An officer & a gentleman perched atop the VCR.

To me, that song is formulaic 80's pop & I certainly don't remember them. I prefer bands that blazed a trail, not followed the pack:

And these. best British band of the last twenty five years. There is no question of that, a massive legacy. You know your musical legacy is secure when you're asked onto Newsnight to deny rumours of a reunion....

And if that weren't enough, things got warm at the end of the decade...

Great last two, this works for me.

YouTube - Stone Roses - I Wanna Be Adored

Fabulous.. its like the tide coming in, slowly but relentlessly.. wave after wave.. getting stronger and stronger. They couldn't hold a beat if their lives depended on it, but who cared? Brilliant memories.

And always cool. But now a bit fat. A bit of a stalkers anthem too. Scary.

YouTube - Morrissey -The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get

This reminds me of jankers.

YouTube - Double - The Captain Of Her Heart

And, well..

YouTube - Furniture - Brilliant Mind 1986

Remember this? A smile with your subversion.

And this. The very best night out I ever had was in the Hacienda, shortly before it finally ran out of New Order's cash.
