Hot Toddys

Yes, It's that time of year again and I have a stinker of a cold. I was wondering what everyone else uses for their hot toddy recipe. My favourite at the moment is honey, lemon juice, hot water and a goodly slug of Scotch! What's your favourite?

Piping hot milk, add Cognac till sweat breaks out on your forehead, add a few spoonfuls of good honey, sprinkle with cinnamon. Repeat until you fall over. Worrying about tomorrow is for tomorrow.

Beat me to it Eastern, wedge of lemon with cloves stuck in it (prevents unsightly sipping) sugar. Then you can debate with a barman/wife whether Powers, Paddy or Bush is best. Taste testing can be damaging.

No, no, no!

Lime juice, honey and hot water in one glass.

Rum in 'tother.

Never mix them.

Well shannon - mine is your recipe, plus cloves.

The important thing to do is inhale (through the nose if poss) the vapour before drinking it. Helps unclog things.

Cold Cures

Honey, whiskey, lemon, hot water - what else ? Milk's not so good as it promotes the generation of snot.

For 11 months two weeks of the year I'm free of such things as colds, but still take a hot toddy as it's nice, all the justifiction you need !

The remaining two weeks of the year is after my annual trip to London, when invariably I return to sunny (and healthy) Spain with a stinker of a cold.

There's a moral to this, but sadly I'm not allowed to miss the annual trip to Europe's own little third-world country in the North Sea.

Oddly enough as I was driving back from Dublin yesterday in a typical anti cyclonic gloom with the bare trees looking very wintery. I got to thinking it was hot toddy time of the year.

Foss and Eastern, that's not just Northern Irish but all Ireland But it has to be Jameson!

I'm also partial to a hot port!

Aye Corsair, I know that right enough. Then there's the problem, do you use a fresh glass every time or let the lemons build up, is it honey or sugar from the bowl (yeah honey/throat but who cares to be honest) warm glass or cold glass and how many can you order in a bar politely before the barman gets really cheesed off making hot toddys for about five people. (Once one person gets one, everyone gets one, it's like yawning)

Foss....I always thought Coleraine was the best for heating up....closely followed by Powers.

Hard to beat standing in Fealty's on a miserable Saturday pouring them down your throat....

Round our way, everyone rocks up to Berry Bros outlet store in Basingstoke to buy some 'King's Ginger' which is a vodka based rocket fuel. It works brilliantly in toddies, with a bit of lemon juice, honey and hot water. Two or three and it's goodnight vienna.

Nah CofF, there's plenty of alcoholics to go around. The pub is well known for daft signs and posters.

City. Hadn't thought of that, that would be as good a reason as any. You'd like it, basic, but workable.

With my ability to tilt a few back, I'm sure I'd get along. Might even learn the language!

Not a chance, after a couple or few hot toddys and everyone would start talking at normal speed, you wouldn't have a hope.
I'd be scribbling furiously doing subtitles, or saying 'What he meant was...'
