This AskOxford: Search Results is a billabong.

That is a muddy puddle.

Curious shape though ! Although I'm wondering if a computer was involved in generating it.

Bluewolf.

Have done similar...

1. Find softish mud whilst driving home from fishing trip, crack a beer;
2. Draw shape and excavate in a shallow manner, crack a beer;
3. Since we are not far from home ditch water jerry cans into design, crack a beer; and,
4. take photos, crack a celebratory beer.

Its not a billabong its on a track. Billabongs are seasonal lakes, as in the river flows, the river dries and lakes form. Next wet season repeat.

New an aboriginal fellow that 'billabong fished'..threw a stick of dynamite into a small billabong (say 1/4 a football/soccer field), killed all the fish, waded in, cooked them up, had a feast (the fish die in weeks anyway in small billabongs due no plants, no oxygen and evaporation).

Bet there's one shaped like Elvis a bit further along the track.

Is this the Aussie equivalent of crop circles?

It has been "shopped".

More smudge-tool practice is required.

Never said I was retracting my original statement about this potentially being a computer assisted job.

However the "official" story goes as follows......
