McCain sure as hell wasn't going to turn anything around. The charts showing US budget deficits over the Bush years are eye-popping. Would McCain have changed anything much? Very, very doubtful.
Then if he died in office you would've had President Palin. Wow. That just blew my mind. President of the United States. Hmmm, wouldn't have been a bad effort for a former beauty queen and hockey mom (though she apparently knows heaps about Russia because you can see it from Alaska)!
just what makes you think we are so much smarter now?
It doesn't.
I just hope that this result brings about a period where the United States becomes more constructively involved in global issues; rather than continuing to preach to the world from a self-appointed pulpit about the benefits of, and the profits to be gained from, 'the American way'

Well I would rather have a tried and tested State Governor running the show than a young lawyer who doesn't practice law and has an abysmal voting record in the Senate, a Senate he has only been in a few years and hardly understands yet. How the old hand Democrats must be rubbing their hands together, they now have this young puppy that they can twist and turn to do their bidding, sod any election campaign promises, what are they?

It could have been worse than that. Palin could have immediately "flipped out" and headed back to Alaska.
With our Presidential succession rules, that would mean Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi as President
Bush will be gone shortly. After that, us colonials will enjoy a short holiday from the endless sniping here. After that, the anti-US lot will face a choice of self criticism, or resume blaming the US for everything.
At least with Palin one would have had something pleasing on the eye.
However, with the US's penchant for bumping off Presidents that they don't like (and let's not forget the red-neck racists out there) then the world is going to have to put up with Biden. God Forbid
All of this talk of leaving the country and fear of our future is based on ignorance.
The real economic problems we face began to show back in mid-2007 when the Credit Derivatives and swaps started to go sour on us. Then the market crashed and the Fed has put 1 Trillion and counting into our financial sector.
Manufacturing, real estate, consumer spending and confidence are finally getting the big picture and are falling accordingly.
Any problems this country faces now was borne out of seeds sown long before Mr. Obama steps into the White House.
Please let us not forget that inconvenient truth!
The world just became a little safer and a little saner.
Finally the United States of America can begin to repair our damaged reputation abroad and fix our damaged economy and reconnect the disenfranchised populace here at home.
