I saw an old man hanging onto Republican catch phrases, all night. "Gen Petraus is a great man", "I reached across the aisle", "I'm not Mr. Congeniality..."the surge worked" etc...
All, I know is my surge worked last night, as I delivered my stimulus packaged to my Wife. I was truly extending myself across the aisle and I'm not Mr. Congeniality at work either.
Regards, Jack Cafferty, I am mistaken, isn't the MSM supposed to be reporting news, not editorializing. Oh, that was Clinton News Network, brought to you by that chicken fried idiot, the Mouth from the South-Ted Turner.
If TR is a favorite prez, he had just the same time as NY governor as Sarah Palin has as AK governor. Cal Coolidge had about the same time on selection to the V-P as Palin.
I watched the debate and found it a fairly scripted affair. I do find politics in the U.S. interesting in the way they make difference between candidates within the same party. Here in Oz there aren't too many differences between leaders of the same party. This would translate in the U.S. as Mcain being identified with the wonderful policies of George W.
For an Antipodean it seems strange that Mcain can't be blamed or at least take some ownership of the situation the U.S. finds itself in now ie war without exit strategy, financial meltdown of epic proportions and an increase in the threat of terrorism and Islamic hostility throughout the world. Yet he does, he convinces others that it's not his doing, when it's the party he represents who have implemented the policies.
Obama is the generational change of the politician who talks then slow change. Does it work? Who knows we've seen it happen here in oz and the results are not in yet. As to Mcain my question is how different is he from the current CEO?

GF,
Is it that you don't know the history -- behind these silly comparisons -- or do you think others don't know it ?
"He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude (22nd of 177) from Harvard in 1880, and entered Columbia Law School. When offered a chance to run for New York Assemblyman in 1881, he dropped out of law school to pursue his new goal of entering public life."
"Roosevelt was a Republican activist during his years in the Assembly, writing more bills than any other New York state legislator."
"Roosevelt became president of the board of New York City Police Commissioners in 1895. During the two years he held this post, Roosevelt radically reformed the police department. The police force was reputed as one of the most corrupt in America. The NYPD's history division records that Roosevelt was "an iron-willed leader of unimpeachable honesty, (who) brought a reforming zeal to the New York City Police Commission in 1895.""
Honestly, if you want to make silly comparisons why not use the Current Occupant -- ex-Governor of the second-biggest state. Here's to better luck with the Governor of the biggest state.
Well one thing did come out of the debate. it's good to see GTF, TC and the other democramt supporters are in favour of a candidate who supports immediately challenging Russia over the issue of what they consider their sphere of influence.
Because, as I am sure you noted, Obama stated his position was that both Georgia and Ukraine should get an immediate action plan to enter NATO.
Bravo Mr Obama, it's not every international statesman who's been willing to advocate that position.
Watched the video....oh boy...oh boy... that's utterly scary... Did some surgeon implanted a chip with random republican quotes which can be transmitted to Palin's brain to answer no matter what question is asked? And did they forgot to program the 700 Billion Bank Bailout answers?
Wow...your kneejerk reaction came even faster then I anticipated. Did you have this saved and just copied it here, CP? Didn't you see my remark to ORAC?
While I support democratic countries like those two (democratic being a rubbery term here), if Obama had had his way, NATO would be at war with Russia right now. Remember an attack on one is an attack on all? NATO (OTAN, anyone?) enlargement made some sense with Eastern Europe, but Georgia is a sea too far. BHO made some stunners last night and that was one of them; Pakistan (POK-i-stan?) is a looming problem and he has proposed a US invasion several months ago. Big bag of not good.
Fair enough about TR, but, since he is considered a "great" president, how does he stack up against BHO?
School Both attended the same schools, in opposite order. No word on how good BHO was.
Experience TR, tip of the hat, had wide ranging government experience in both foreign affairs and domestic issues. State assemblyman, knowledgeable about "crime", civil service, etc.
BHO, not so much; state senator for awhile, left no tracks in the snow there(voted "present" 130 times), 153 days longer as a Senator than Palin has as a governor; left no tracks in the snow there, either except to run for President from Day One. Never held a meeting of his sub-committee that oversees NATO, of all things. If he supports Ukraine and Georgia in NATO, maybe he should have held a hearing on the subject. Work experience, where TR ranched, explored and lived "the strenuous life", BHO was "community organizer" for the rabble-rousing, vote-frauding ACORN organization. A part-time law prof (if you can't do, teach), part-time lawyer who let his license lapse. Deadbeat, to me.
Foreign Policy TR invented jingoism, extremely nationalistic, just about thirsted for war, left DC to recruit his own army to invade Cuba. As president, believed in seizing as much power as Congress would let him have. Created a country, dug a canal and created an American outpost. If you like TR, you should love GWB. That points the problem I have with a lack of Constitutional "tether" attached to the Presidential and Congressional power, they can do anything they like and we just wait around 'til the Election.
BHO seems all over the place-bomb Pakistan, get out of Iraq (no, we'll withdraw orderly, maybe), NATO expansion as a debate line (its not in his platform), foreign policy for him seems like it was for Bill Clinton-ad hoc. Bill, said we would be in FRY for ONE year, still there 13 years later with no end in sight. Scary judgement in the very messy and dangerous world, which will become a lot more so if the world economy crumps.
Domestic TR was the original "reformer" who operated to the annoyance of the established Republican party, a John McCain of his time. Sponsored many reform measures before being President. BHO, no tracks here, either. Consistently votes party line, no bills of note, do nothing to piss off his puppet masters-Bill Ayers (the original terrorist) the Daly Machine and assorted convicted criminals.
McCain's background and experience and temperment is vastly closer to TR's. An outsider from his party, considers national honor sacrosanct, reform a necessity.
When do you vote McCain?

Eisenhower has a really interesting religious history...Nothing more interesting than this:
Eisenhower was baptized, confirmed, and became a communicant in the Presbyterian Church in a single ceremony on February 1, 1953, just 12 days after his first inauguration.[13]
I read those links and have to ask...so what?
By my inaccurate count, you've implied some nefarious relationship between Republicans, religion and "The Family" a dozen or so times in recent posts. What in heaven's name, if you will pardon the pun, are you driving at? Why don't you just come out and explain the details of whatever goofy conspiracy theory keeps you up at night?
And now Dwight Eisenhower somehow is implicated in this mysterious plot? Good grief. If the likes of a patriot, hero and committed small "d" democrat like Eisenhower is part of this shadowy group, where can I sign up? Can't think of any better company, actually.
Let me impersonate a GTF post, see how I do...but instead of using GTF's right-wing villans, let me try with some left-wingers instead:
Here goes:
Because I am so learned and erudite, and because I have the Wikipedia URL hot-keyed to my return key, and because I have lots of free time on my hands, I have been able to discover some very interesting information about the democrats.
I'll bet you didn't realize that democrat Robert Byrd is a former member of the KKK, and a Freemason, and that Freemasonary has ties to the mystic Jewish cult Kabbalah through the Kabalistic "Tree of Life."
And we all know that Madonna is a democrat and practioner of Kaballah, and that she supports Barack Obama.
I will leave it up to you to devine the connection between Robert Byrd and Madonna, but it has something to do with Michael Jackson's known use of the Masonic "W" hand symbol.
the economy as a whole -- it's almost been destroyed.
GTF
Considering it is far better than anywhere else, any basis for that assertion? Our median income, on a PPP basis, is second only to Switzerland and streets ahead of most of Europe our closest competitor. We now enjoy the best of the world's products at a fraction of the cost elsewhere. A Mercedes is cheaper here than in Stuttgart. Since 1983, we have roughly tripled our real per capita GDP. You may not like our Gini index, but overall living standards here exceed 99% of the world's dreams. Most of the world would die to come here. I've been to 60+ countries and everywhere the most frequent question I get is, "when can I immigrate?" Yes, some are dismissive, but it is a envious minority. We're not perfect, I'd love to live in OZ for example, but way better than the competition. Every society is an endless series of compromises, but 301 million Yanks and 12+ million illegal immigrants seem to like it.
If this is "destroyed", I can't wait for a good economy. And BHO won't deliver it next year, but I doubt McCain will either.

Oh come on Kaos, you should know by now that if you are going to quote the Guardian as a reliable source then you are going to attract ridicule, and rightly so.
One barometer of how things are doing: service at the fast-food joints.
When the economy is bad, folks hold on to those low-end jobs and become reasonably competent in getting the food order right and with timely delivery. As conditions improve, those folks have acquired some talent and are able to find better-paying jobs, and the restaurant has to hire inexperienced help to replace them. Speed and quality suffer.
Yesterday I stopped to pick up a couple sandwiches to take home. The "fast food" didn't show up for nearly 15 minutes, and they got the order wrong.
And while we think of a 5+% unemployment rate as bad, last year Canada was bragging about how they had gotten unemployment DOWN to 6%!
And while we think of a 5+% unemployment rate as bad, last year Canada was bragging about how they had gotten unemployment DOWN to 6%!
EXACTLY! Economy "destroyed", I don't think so. France has 7.5% and climbing, over the last 20 years, growth averaged 2%, ours about 3.5%. The French government takes about 53% of the GDP in taxes and unions burn the place down as part of "industrial actions". No wonder, I see French young adults everywhere BUT in France. GTF-get around and see the competition. It isn't pretty!
Considering it is far better than anywhere else, any basis for that assertion?
Certainly. Pick up any newspaper in the world and read last week's headlines.
I understand your fear and frustration, GF. It's not an easy thing to take -- being betrayed. The Party of "free markets" and small government has managed to royally mess up both. They left the right war -- one in which they had and still have the country's support -- for the wrong war and lied to the country to get us there. No WMD, no crowds in the street that love us and no cheap oil to fill our cars. The "free market" is shaking in its boots and has "run to mommy" -- the Government -- to save it from itself. Who would have thought that the "Masters of the Universe" would need "the nanny state" to save them ? It's got to be hard on you.
I understand. I know how hard it must be to acknowledge that your countrymen want change so badly that the Republican Party -- the status quo -- is falling apart. You want to believe it's just the Democrats that are desperate for change -- so desperate that they'd nominate a relatively young (half) black man -- but you don't notice that Sarah Palin's nomination was met with the same thirst for change. Young and relatively inexperienced, but she has the essential ingredient -- change. A 72-year-old politician doesn't represent change -- no matter how many times he says it.
The Republicans thirst for it too -- so much so that Ms. Palin eclipsed the party's nominee. You see the same thing in Biden. He doesn't represent any change -- except to the current regime. There's no excitement about him. It's all about CHANGE. And the whole country wants it.
Unfortunately, Palin's star will continue to dull with every day that goes by. She's not ready -- and everyone knows it. She hasn't been through the 2 year wringer that we call a political campaign and there's not much doubt in anyone's mind that she wouldn't survive it.
That leaves us with Obama. He's bright, articulate and he has proven he can survive the process. Actually, not only survive but win. Remember when Hillary was "unbeatable"? You can harp on his relative inexperience but you're shoveling sand against the tide because it is that same hope of change -- of something new, different, exciting, hopefully better -- that makes him so attractive to the electorate.
He was winning before the economy started melting down (or before most people recognized it was.) His chances will only improve now. Start looking for the really nasty attack ads from the Republicans any day now. McCain has already proven he'll do whatever he has to do to win. And that includes embracing George Bush, pandering to the "agents of intolerance" and making a wild gamble on Ms. Palin.

Hi GTF,
I think your post sums things up quite well.
Have you had a look at the alternate data link I posted a while back?
If anyone seriously believes that the economy is still doing ok its worth visiting to see how the numbers stack up when calculated the old way.
"Its the economy stupid" is a line from the past that again rings true.
