Now that John Edwards wife, Elizabeth, has been diagnosed with incurable cancer, God Bless her, how do you think this will affect the primaries?

Follow up question that Mrs. C-P, many of our friends and myself have been discussing this since the news about her condition was released.

Should Edwards drop out of the Presidential race?

(Funny enough in our group of friends all the women say he should keep running, but most of us men say he should drop out.)

If everyone who has had a close family member fall victim to cancer votes for him, he's a shoo-in....

"but most of us men say he should drop out"

Are most of the men Republicans????

I think he will garner some support for a while but it will fade over time. Fade over time provided they let it, any major changes aside. Courageous woman.

Fred Thompson trial balloon is really inflating. I like him.

And not just for this classic line from "The Hunt for Red October,"

"Son, a Russian doesn't take a dump without a plan."

He could very well be the 'come from the end of the field winner'.

I loved his statement on the differences between acting and being a politician. (Paraphrasing here)

"Hell, there is no difference, I just get payed a lot more acting in Hollywood than in Washington."

I think Alberto Gonzales might want to wait a week or two before putting his hat in the ring though.

Fundraising figures for Q1 2007 have been published:

Democrats:
Hillary - $26 million (plus $10 million left over from her last Senate run)
Obama - $25million
John Edwards - $14 million
Bill Richardson - $6 million
Christopher Dodd - $4 million
Joe Biden -$1-$2 million

Republicans:
Mitt Romney - $20.63 million
Rudy Giuliani - $14 million
John McCain - $12.5 million
Sam Brownback - $1.3 million
Mike Huckabee - $500,000.

Seems predictable on the Democrats side, but the Romney/Giuliani figures (erlative to each other) are a surprise. I did a quick speed-read of this thread, and didn't spot Romney's name once. Can one of our US friends give the lowdown on him?

Mitt Romney is truly an outstanding individual.

As governor of Massachusetts, Mr. Romney presided over a major turn-around of fortunes for the state. At the same time, Gov. Romney also put forth some very progressive educational and social programs during his term that with any luck should serve as a model for other states in the years to come.

For the generally silly US electorate reservations about such things and possibly the reason that former Gov. Romney did not appear on the radar of this thread is most likely due to the minor fact that he's a Mormon. Sad, but true.

Mr Romney first bipped on 'my' radar a few years back when he signed Ally's Law.

A sensible and compassionate piece of lawmaking.

Here's Mitt's website. He's a smart guy, great businessman, and made the 2002 Olympics at Salt Lake City a success. Oh, and he looks like a potential President!

Although I do agree that Mr. Romney has done some impressive and good work, there are several reasons why I believe putting him in the position of being the most powerful man in the world would be very dangerous.

Most importantly he is a Mormon, and without being too much of a religious bigot let me just say that this suggests he may have a couple of screws loose. Do we really need another man who may not be in touch with reality being leader of the free world? Throughout history there have been wars with religious conservatives fighting wars against other religious conservatives, the situation we see today is not much different. Both sides utterly convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that they're right and the other side is pure evil, and they are doing the will of God/Allah. The only chance we have at peace is to set an example by electing an Agnostic. I will dream on thank you.

Another problem is Mr. Romney's opinion on how we should be fighting the terrorist threat and the standoff with Iran, it seems entirely too similar to Bush's opinion. Bush's methodology has been proved time and time again to be counterproductive, disasterous, and detrimental to global security. Some people will never learn.

Obama and Edwards seem like the best of the bunch so far, but excuse me for being crude and saying Hillary is a bitch. Can't we just have leaders we respect and admire for once, perhaps even people who inspire us? Everything Obama says just hits the nail right on the head, his views have foundations in logic and common sense, rather than the ridiculous ideologies and fantasies that the neo-cons have conjured up so far. Edwards is also an inspiring and courageous man with an impressive record.

Oh no, here I go sticking my nose in where I don't belong again . It's your leader America, the rest of the world reaps the consequences of his/her actions, but it's your leader.

PanPan, I haven't found much in your posts to agree with.
However, despite your being a long way from the US these days, you've hit this one on the head. Except for that rubbish about Edwards.
I'm known as a right wing lunatic. But I'm still for Obama. It's time to try "character" as a qualification for president.
But he's no agnostic!

obgraham, I haven't found much in your posts to agree with, as you with PPY. However, I do like your comment

Yes, that would be a very nice change indeed. Some intelligence wouldn't go amiss, either.

PPY - may I meekly suggest you don't know many Mormons.

Their ideology is way out there, but if you judge them by the way they live.....

I don't envision any of their chances as being good at all. Then again, maybe the US could help out with that Mugabe issue by importing him and giving the Democrat bigwigs the kind of government they really seem to want.
