To hell with the consequences, i.e. every dumbshit has one. (police included in that category). So if someone burglarises your joint, the worst idea is to pull your gun, cos he will have a bigger one and will pump you full of hot lead before you can say 'constitutional right'.

Most violent crime occurs amongst drug dealers/losers/dropouts. After that it is domestic violence. In TN , there are more fatal shootings of men by their wives than any other cause. Any burglar just wants money. It is a natural human instinct not to kill other humans. If you pull a gun, they are threatened and will enact the animal survival instinct and pull their gun back. Just give the money, and they will most likely go away.
Secure the house properly, the chances of getting a weapon out of a cabinet, loading it and actually hitting someone in the dark with it are pretty slim. If you do open fire indoors, the round will go through plasterboard maybe one or two rooms, if you hit a brick or block wall at an acute angle, it'll track down the wall until it hits a door frame, and go into that room. Who's in any of these rooms? Wife, child? Once you do fire you'll be blind and deaf. Secure doors, heavy doors, motion censor lights outside. Safer I think.

you still probably wouldn't hit him, might hit family member or a neighbour and then he'd take it off you and use it against you. That's assuming you hadn't already got rid of the thing because your neighbour's son had plugged your kid with it when they were playing one day.
I've done my shooting courses for shooting in dark or even dim conditions. It is remarkably difficult. Anyway, on another practical note, where are you going to carry your ammunition. You're in your boxers. If your using you shotgun, you've got two goes. If it's a pistol, elevenish, fifteenish depending. You can't chase him down the driveway firing away, because you used your two goes, you're barefoot, and it's an illegal use of excessive force, they are no longer a threat to you. Any legal eagles can help me with that one, might be wrong.

Actually I think the US gun laws will serve the most important role yet shortly when the Bush dictator regime rolls out more and more infringments on the rights of the american people to "fight terror". By the time the citizens wake up and smell the coffee it IS going to take guns to retake control of government.

If there ever is another civil war in the United States (there are civil wars in the Americas all the time) it will be between the legals versus the illegals.
I remember Alan Whicker doing a USA series. In one programme he went out and about with the cops in LA. They took him to meet their favourite shopkeeper - a lady they called 'Granny.' She turned out to be a tiny four foot ten inch old lady, in her late seventies. "Show him yer gun, Granny." the cops said. She reached under the counter and hauled up a .44 Magnum.
Seems that the old couple had suffered armed robbery many times and the insurance company wouldn't insure them any more. Her husband bought the gun and stashed it in a drawer next to the till - for his own use. One night Granny had a gun pointed at her and was ordered to hand over the cash. As she went into the till she saw the drawer and so she opened it, took out the gun and shot the robber right in the face. He fell on the floor and made a gurgling noise, which frightened her. So, she shot him again. The cops said there was no need, he was dead before he hit the floor. They figured it was pure adrenalin that enabled her to handle the weapon - especially to keep hold of it during the recoil.
In the two years following her shooting demonstration the couple had never been robbed again. The cops reckoned it wasn't because the crooks were afraid of her; its just that she now had "respect" on the street.

Have fun "staying the course" and when the surveillance cameras starts popping up, and they ask you to hand in your guns go ahead. Then one night when the cops bust your door in declaring you an "unlawful combatant" and place you in a cell indefinitely without giving you a reason for doing so, feel warm and fuzzy in the knowledge that you are at least safe from raging terrorists. Read the documents, this they can already do to any US citizen. ANY US CITIZEN. In fact, they could do it to me. How long will it be before an internet post like this constitutes grounds enough for a seize? The military comissions act with regards to the definition of unlawful combatant reads in part "...a person who has engaged in hostilities or who has purposefully and materially supported hostilities against the United States or its co-belligerents who is not a lawful enemy combatant...". Engaged in hostilities. I acting as the US goverment could, using this sweeping definition mark virtually anyone as an unlawful combatant. Once this is done, this person enjoys no legal rights, nor his he protected by the geneva convention. In fact, this act allow the GOP to put you in a cell for no reason PENDING an investigation wether or not you should be considered an unlawful combatant or not. Pending for how long? The goverment decides that. Investigated by whom? The goverment as well. So in reality you could sit there in your cell tucked away until you rot "pending an investigation". Constitutional? Due process? All the information is out there, free for all to read and if you think it's going to stop with this you need a serious reality check. And yeah, this is important. G0ddam crucial in fact. So maybe you need put the wendy's burger down, stop bitching about the gas prices and concern yourselves with the fact that your own government is consolidating it's own power and passing laws that cirumvent peoples rights under the pretense of a terror threat. This is happening right NOW. When you get tired of the sand in your ears, yank your head up and do what it takes to get your country back. The United States is a great country, I know because I've lived there and I would do it again but this is serious right now and it will get worse, and it's not going to get better unless the citizens stand up and say enough is enough. Americans pride themselves for their constitution, bill of rights and freedom to live as they see fit. Surrendering these rights and freedoms for the vague "war on terror" is the biggest mistake you could make and once they are taken from you I promise you will not get them back again. Are you going to be a proud american about it and say h€ll no or keep your head in the sand?

More than a few are concerned about the loss of liberty and freedom in the name of security. Someone might have more accurate info, but I still don't believe the US goverment has the powers the French have in locking up suspects.
As for being armed, the residents, (indigenous population), living near the highway on which I drive to the airport, got all worked up in the late 1980's over a perceived slight. They tossed debris onto the road, and when the motorists stopped to avoid damage to their vehicles, they pulled them out of their cars and killed them.
