Negative Nostalgia

All the nostalgia threads I have seen here recall with yearning the Good Old Days. There is a place, however, for even more sincere rejoicing at those dear old songs we seem never to hear any more.

There was the bloody "Raggle Taggle Gypsy-o", the swine who whistled and sang 'til the greenwood rang. Remember, the leddy whose heart he won jacked in wealth and comfort to join the RTGO? Did she Hell!

Then there was that "Eeenglish Contry Gaa-arden".

"Cherry Roipe, Cherry Roipe, Roipe, Roipe, Roipe" had its very own grisly quality, and who can recall without a shudder "Commm eentow tha gaaarden Maude"?

But the one I best never hear most these days used to be sung ad infinitum and ad nauseam, to her own piano accompaniment, by the older soprano female cousin of a friend of mine when I was 8 or so, the unspeakable:

Chorus
Oh, the days of the Kerry dancing
Oh, the ring of the piper's tune
Oh, for one of those hours of gladness
Gone, alas, like our youth, too soon!

When the boys began to gather
In the glen of a summer's night
And the Kerry piper's tuning
Made us long with wild delight!
Oh, to think of it
Oh, to dream of it
Fills my heart with tears!

Gone, alas, not a moment too soon.

Where the bee sucks, there suck I
In a cowslip’s bell I lie;
There I couch when owls do cry.
On the bat’s back I do fly
After summer merrily:
Merrily, merrily shall I live now
Under the blossom that hangs on the bough.

The Tempest
By William Shakespeare
Ultra-Condensed by Samuel Stoddard and David J. Parker

Prospero
Ariel, help me strand my enemies on my magic island.

(Prospero and Ariel use their magic to trap his enemies and exact revenge.)

Prospero
That's enough. Enemies, I forgive you all, and one of you can marry my daughter. I'm going home.

It was an itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny yellow polka dot bikini
That she wore for the first time today...

Chinese water torture for the transistor generation.

Spring was never waiting for us girl,
It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance...

Did Noel Harrison ever live that down?

See the tree how big it's grown
But friends it hasn't been too long
It wasn't big...

A 45 rpm example of that atrocity came with Mrs. p, and is probably still around somewhere.

Terry Jacks!

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be. Praise God for small mercies.

Sorry to be a pedant Piggy, but the song you refer to " Spring was never..." was by Richard Harris. Noel Harrison did the one that went "Run, like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel"
MacArthur Park versus Windmills of your mind.

It pains me to admit that I know this.

Ken, you are correct.

For some reason I confused the two. Noel Harrison was actuall a pretty good singer. He lived for awhile in rural Nova Scotia. Had his own half-hour variety show on CBC TV.

Luckily, I'm only the assistant quizmeister.

Early one morning just as the sun was rising
I heard a maiden sing in the valley below....

Stupid tart.....

But there are some good tunes out there. I do like the music in the Sharpe series, especially John Tams singing the theme tune, The Recruiting Sergeant.

Hark! now the Drums beat up again,
For all true Soldiers Gentlemen,
Then let us list, and march I say,
Over the Hills and far away;
Over the Hills and o'er the Main,
To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,
Queen Ann commands, and we'll obey,
Over the Hills and far away.

All Gentlemen that have a Mind,
To serve the Queen that's good and kind;
Come list and enter into Pay,
Then o'er the Hills and far away;
Over the Hills, &c.

Here's Forty Shillings on the Drum,
For those that Volunteers do come,
With Shirts, and Cloaths, and present Pay,
When o'er the Hills and far away;
Over the Hills, &c.

Hear that brave Boys, and let us go,
Or else we shall be prest you know;
Then list and enter into Pay,
And o'er the Hills and far away;
Over the Hills, &c.

The Constables they search about,
To find such brisk young Fellows out;
Then let's be Volunteers I say,
Over the Hills and far away;
Over the Hills, &c.

Since now the French so low are brought,
And Wealth and Honour's to be got,
Who then behind wou'd sneaking stay?
When o'er the Hills and far away;
Over the Hills, &c.

No more from sound of Drum retreat,
While Marlborough, and Gallaway beat,
The French and Spaniards every Day,
When o'er the Hills and far away;
Over the Hills, &c.

He that is forc'd to go and fight,
Will never get true Honour by't,
While Volunteers shall win the Day,
When o'er the Hills and far away;
Over the Hills, &c.

What tho' our Friends our Absence mourn,
We all with Honour shall return,
And then we'll sing both Night and Day,
Over the Hills and far away;
Over the Hills, &c.

The Prentice Tom he may refuse,
To wipe his angry Master's Shoes;
For then he's free to sing and play,
Over the Hills and far away;
Over the Hills, &c.

Over Rivers, Bogs, and Springs,
We all shall live as great as Kings,
And Plunder get both Night and Day,
When o'er the Hills and far away;
Over the Hills, &c.

We then shall lead more happy Lives,
By getting rid of Brats and Wives,
That Scold on both Night and Day,
When o'er the Hills and far away;
Over the Hills, &c.

Come on then Boys and you shall see,
We every one shall Captains be,
To Whore and rant as well as they,
When o'er the Hills and far away;
Over the Hills, &c.

For if we go 'tis one to Ten,
But we return all Gentlemen,
All Gentlemen as well as they,
When o'er the Hills and far away;
Over the Hills, &c.

But then, I´ve always been a fan of folk music. Martin Carthy, Maddy Prior, June Tabor etc. See you at the Cambridge Folk Festival...

DRAPES he's in his hammock an' a thousand mile away,
(Capten, art tha sleepin' there below?)
Slung atween the round shot in Nombre Dios Bay,
An' dreamin' arl the time o' Plymouth Hoe.
Yarnder lumes the island, yarnder lie the ships,
Wi' sailor lads a-dancin' heel-an'-toe,
An' the shore-lights flashin', an' the night-tide dashin'
He sees et arl so plainly as he saw et long ago.

Drapes he was a Tyneside man, an' ruled the Northern seas,
(Capten, art tha sleepin' there below?),
Rovin' tho' his death fell, he went wi' heart at ease,
An' dreamin' arl the time o' Plymouth Hoe,
"Take my drum to England, hang et by the shore,
Strike et when your powder's runnin' low;
If the Dons sight Devon, I'll quit the port o' Heaven,
An' drum them up the Channel as we drummed them long ago."

Drapes he's in his hammock till the great Armadas come,
(Capten, art tha sleepin' there below?),
Slung atween the round shot, listenin' for the drum,
An' dreamin' arl the time o' Plymouth Hoe.
Call him on the deep sea, call him up the Sound,
Call him when ye sail to meet the foe;
Where the old trade's plyin' an' the old flag flyin',
They shall find him, ware an' wakin', as they found him long ago.

The day is yours Mr R4.

A bold hippopotamus was standing one day
On the banks of the cool Shalimar.
He gazed at the bottom as it peacefully lay
By the light of the evening star.
Away on the hilltop sat combing her hair,
His fair hippopotamine maid.
The hippopotamus was no ignoramus
And sang her this sweet serenade.

CHORUS
Mud, mud, glorious mud!
Nothing quite like it for cooling the blood.
So follow me, follow, down to the hollow,
And there let us wallow in glorious mud.

The fair hippopotamus he aimed to entice
From her seat on the hilltop above,
As she hadn't got a Ma to give her advice
Came tiptoeing down to her love.
Like thunder the forest re-echoed the sound
Of the song that they sang as they met.
His inamorata adjusted her garter
And lifted her voice in duet.
(Chorus)

Now more hippopotami began to convene
On the banks of that river so wide.
I wonder now what am I to say of the scene
That ensued by the Shalimar side.
They dived all at once with an ear-splitting splosh,
Then rose to the surface again,
A regular army of hippopotami
All singing this haunting refrain.
(Chorus)

They doesn't write em like that no more.
