Nothing like a nice fire

In a fireplace of course. Gas fires just don't do it although getting wood can be a problem in our high society. Cosy evenings, roaring fire.

I used to love me open coal fire, they were a pain in the arse first thing in the morning to clean out and light though, was in a house out in the sticks a couple of weeks ago, it had a lovely roaring coal fire.
The demise of the coal fire is to blame for all the rubbish and shite blowing about our streets now folks just used to chuck their rubbish on the back of the fire at one time.

I wouldn't have thunk a log fire was the safest thing to have on a boat Mr Invisible one assumes by boat you mean something made of wood, nothing worse than yer log stove burning its way through yer keel and giving you a china syndrome when yer rounding the Horn in a force 12.

I put it you you Mr Draper Sir, that the 'horn' can only be rounded if you don't have enough 'wood'

One was going to say "Beating ones way around the Horn" but thunk better of it,knowing some prooner would pounce on such a statement, incidently the Cape of ill repute is named after a Dutchman,"Van Hoon", not after some anatomical phenomenon.

Was of "ill repute"

Cape Horn fever is the name given to the sickness suffered by a member of the crew who is pretending to be unwell in rough and heavy weather and trying to get out of his duties on the upper deck.

I'm fortunate enough to have gas central heating and a coal fire - no damned good when the cat decides to peer up the chimney!

What is it with cats and their fascination for soot?
