Record Companies Ripping Off Public Again

The BPI (an industry body) has bullied CD WOW into increasing their prices to protect fat profits in the UK.

This is anti competitive and means that we all have to pay high street inflated prices. The record companies have ganged up to create an anti competitive system and force CD Wow to increase their prices.

The Government cannot intervene unless people complain about this cartel action.

Complaints should be sent to

Phillip Griggs
Competition Enforcement Branch 4
Office of Fair Trading
Fleetbank House
2-6 Salisbury Square
LONDON
EC4Y 8JX

phillip.griggs@oft.gsi.gov.uk

NOTE TO THE MODS.
Whilst I would never normally post someone's email address to PPRuNe he is the formal contact for this complaint and his email address was given to me as the conduit for the public to complain through.

Movie comapnies and the record industry are chasing Play for "grey imports" which is one of the reasons their prices have gone up so much in the last few months!

I often wonder how you can pick up a blank CD for approx £1 (often cheaper) yet a Music CD costs between £10 and £20. Everyone has to have their share but 100%? And they wonder why Napster etc start up? somebody is making a lot of money

That don't explain why CDs are much more expensive in the UK than America.
If movie companies and record industry didn't pay stupid money to movie actors and recording artists they could charge less and people wouldn't be so tempted to buy grey copies.
Same goes for computer software.

It also doesn't explain why CDs have always been a lot more expensive than cassettes or vinyl, despite being significantly cheaper to produce and distribute. Same with DVDs as compared to VHS tapes. If they charged a fair price I'd buy a lot more CDs and DVDs.

"I often wonder how you can pick up a blank CD for approx £1 "

ONE POUND?!!!! Holy crap!

Here you get blank Moser Baer CDs for fourteen rupees (should be 20 pence I guess) each in a pack of ten - hundred and forty bucks, and they're cheaper if you buy in bulk packets of 30 which cost 375 bucks or 5 odd pounds.

the next time any friend / relative comes to India/Asia, ask them to get you blank CDs. Even proper marketed and official releases (like the Moser Baers I buy) seem to cost one-fifth of the cost in the UK.

btw, my CDs are the standard 700 MB / 80 mins ones. CD covers are at two rupees each.

just checked the currency rate - one pound isnt around the 70 rupees that I expected, its more like 83. so 375 bucks is 4 odd pounds.

my intention isnt to poke fun and laugh - this thing genuinely puts me off. Out here too CDs are priced at insane 350+ bucks when good blank CDs are 5% of the cost. Any wonder why so-called piracy exists here too?
