Qatar MPL vs ATPL integrated - CTC Wings

Hi,

I have applied to CTC's MPL with Qatar Airways as well as CTC ATPL integrated, and hoping to get a bite for both.

I am wondering what the catch is for the CTC MPL course with Qatar? The way I see it, you don't get taken all the way to ATPL until 1500hrs, and not sure if they pay for TR (!?) so you could be spend several thousand for TR and you could also risk being fired for x/y reason before you reach 1500 hours - which would mean getting another pilot job after difficult as you won't have been issued with ATPL.

With CTC ATPL you aren't guaranteed a job after (98% graduates get placed they say on their website) but you do get to frozen ATPL on completion (>18 months) which means you are more employable (?)

Just weighing up options, would welcome thoughts and/or experiences.

For Qatar's MPL, the costs include a TR on the A320. You're right you do not get an ATPL, however upon completion of 1500 hours on the MPL, your license (probably through a straight-forward conversion) becomes a regular UN-FROZEN ATPL.
You are correct, you're screwed if you get fired for no reason, however most airlines won't do this. If you screw up and don't follow SOP's a few times, then you face going through the formal disciplinary process. But this is with most airline related roles, and I know this working on the ground for a large british airline. So brace yourself for this, aswell as a massive change in lifestyle and culture in Qatar. You'll either hate it or love it, but every experience is a new experience, and as long as you're up for the challenge you'll do fine.

With the CTC Wings route, you are correct, you end up with the standard FROZEN ATPL, which only get's unfrozen at 1500 hours - EXACTLY the same as the MPL. BUT there is NO GURANTEE of a job, there is no TR included (which will more or less cost approximately £20k more). It's a brilliant course with hopeful job prospects but the biggest thing there is no guarantee.

HOWEVER, you CANT apply to BOTH SCHEMES. CTC will shortly ask you to pull out from one. The reason is because when you apply for the MPL, you follow the exact selection procedure as the Wings course. You sit the same pre-screening, PILAPT, interviews. IF you pass the PILAPT and interview, but your scores are not high enough to be shortlisted to the final interview with Qatar Airways, CTC will advise you whether or not you have met the entrance requirements for their Wing's course.

Hopefully that wasn't too confusing and if I've missed anything or said something wrong then someone will correct me

God luck!

Can someone please explain the current situation with this programme. Previously stage 4 was done in the uk. However now it seems they are favouring Doha. That's fine, however what isn't is that they expect the cadet to fund this ???? Return to Doha is over £800, they can't be serious ? Can they ?
Can someone who has done this please explain exactly how much this trip added up to ? I love the way CTC make it seem a good thing as they say it's a chance to experince the qr operations, pfffff what utter rubbish. I've flown qr previously, why should they force you to do so again.

Any info is greatly appreciated, thanks

@Officer Kite

Don't worry. A CTC rep has flown over to QR to discuss more Stage 4 dates. They are trying to get some dates here in the UK aswell as Doha. For those who have the time and money to fly to QR they can opt to do that, and for other, they can do it in the UK. Just hang on for a bit longer I know the wait is annoying.

I went to DOH. total trip for 4 days totalled best part of 1000british tender.
It might also be a selection to see whose serious enough to fly out there... I don't know. But i had a fantastic experience to see QR and doha for the first time. ...I hear Doha is now more frequent ...but if you dont want to take the risk then waiting in UK is by no means wrong. Just might have to wait 2-3 months

If it is part of selection to see who is serious about it then there is something seriously wrong with the qatar wings programme. When I applied there was no mentioning of going to Qatar at all, not on the site or over the phone. Now the site has been changed and I had to wait months for a UK date.
What if you can't just magic up over £1000 ?
I think it's just a sign of what's to come in the middle east and therefore i'm out.

General questions: How many successful applicants have there been to the CTC Qatar Wings programme so far? Any stories from those who have been successful on what life is like in Qatar and on the line in the 320? Is it living up to their expectations?

Not sure if there are any success stories so far. Not sure if it's been running long enough. Currently on the course.. know of about 3 groups running with a possible other one coming soon. If you have the money it's a great opportunity.. right hand seat of a 320 in <2 years. Don't expect travel to be covered during application process though. Try and get it in writing if they say they will reimburse!!

well first intake there was 900 aplicants for 9 places from what I have been told.

Me and others who passed Phase 4 worked out roughly 5% of all applicants get on the course.

The scheme has not been running long enough for Qatar Cadets to migrate over to Doha yet, the first boys on the course are just finishing their NZ phase i think.

Been in contact CTC/FTE grads that were then taken on by QR and they are loving it.

"well first intake there was 900 aplicants for 9 places "

I was told by CTC and according to the site the qr wings is non competitive based, meaning if you meet a set standard you're in, rather than competing against eachother like for example the BA FPP.

When you say 9 out of 900 met the standard, where did the 900 number come from? Was that how many online applications they received or was that how many people made it to stage one?

I can almost be sure if it was 900 online applications then at least half would not have had the minimum requirements. Still out of 450 applicants I doubt that only 9 people met the standard. I would suspect that as the stages progressed that they could only take a certain number of people forward. You know 300 for stage one then 100 for stage 2 etc. That means that the process is competitive. It doesn't matter what you got, if you weren't in the top whatever for that stage you lost out.

When CX for example were hiring low timers, if you passed the test and interview stage one and two you went on a waiting list. Sometimes all would progress and other times none. That is a truly non competitive process. I fear this one isn't

pilot chute - from intial online application to Passing Phase 4
If you meet standard in 1,2,3 then you wait for interview with QR no competition ..just have to hit the grade. I was suprised at the number too and I couldn't believe it.

I am certain CTC don't choose who go through to the next stage by percentiles. if 200 people applied hit the grade on initial application then 200 people make it to phase 2 and so on

Visa type

So I have filled an application although I'm a bit scared about the whole job guarantee. Im international student here in UK and I was wondering does having a BEng and MSc in UK qualifies you to not take an ILETS? also does anyone know what type of visa is required to obtain ?

So the selection is non- competitive, therefore if you pass stage 2 and 3, you would be put forward for the competitive stage 4? Roughly how many cadets are Qatar looking for- any ideas?

Also can anyone advise what the maths test is about I.e question types level and number.

Thanks in advanced.

From what I'm told none of the stages are competitive. At the selection they told use that there are places for all of us, remember that Qatar have 280 aircraft on order!

As far as the maths is concerned, it was 15 questions in 15 minutes. It wasn't particularly hard, just practice your long and short multiplication and division.

On another note, does anyone know if Qatar are included in the APL security bond transfer on completion of the training which is then paid back to the cadets?

CTC wings

I'v done my assessment month ago in Doha and the assessment was as following :

1. There will be 2 people from CTC, they will try to make you comfortable by welcoming you, give you a chance to know each other, and giving you a brief explanation about CTC Institution, the course details, and the wages that your going to get with Qatar Airways. Anyway, this is has nothing to do with the assessment.

2. You will begin with the group exercise, you will talk about a topic that related to the airline industry (e.g. how to increase efficiency, and service), and a few other group exercises. Nothing difficult at all, my advice is to be confidant, don't be afraid to give an opinion even if it was wrong, respect others point, and try not to disagree a lot .

3. The Math Test : 20 questions in 20 Minutes , very simple, nothing complicated, mostly long multiplication and division questions, just revise your SAT papers.

4. The PILPAT: Grid Concentration Test, Hands Information Processing Test, ILS Tracking Test, Multidimensional Capacity Test, Pattern Recognition Test, Flight Director. I found a difficulty in these test, so just be prepared

5. The Panel Interview : Typical interview questions, my advise is to prepare the answer for each question, read books about Airline Interview or Airline Selection, and speak the answers loud to yourself as preparation.

At the end, I strongly recommend the Skytest PILPAT Software as preparation for the aptitude test, and if you feel not ready just postpone your assessment to the next date.
