Freight Dogs Finally a forum for those midnight prowler types who utilise the unglamorous parts of airports that many of us never get to see. Freight Dogs is for pilots and crew who operate mostly without SLF.

Bryson's/MIA

I attended Riddle when it was in Miami in 1963 and Bryson's was one of the best pilots bars in Miami then. Thousands of pilots have bellied up there. Used to be a good place to pick up a 6 crew. I left Miami for retirement in central Florida. Glad to hear it's still there. Used to live in the motel across the street when it was The Green Mansions Apartments. Had one of the best blues clubs in Miami downstairs named the Mau Mau Lounge and Bryson's across the street. Nothing wrong with that.

The motel across the street from Bryson's is still there - name changed...?
All I can say - it is the lowest price motel in the area - low weekly rates too.
They have a bed... 25 watts light bulbs... TV occasionally works... shower with water...
The opposite corner had "Mi Tierra" - a little Cuban restaurant. Closed now.
My Argentina boys had language wars with the Cubans there... was fun.
Then, throw-in some Dominicans and Puerto Ricans. Is that Spanish...?
Then with my French language, try to communicate in Haitian Creole...

United Nations of airlines... right for that.
Our Brits here have their pubs to play darts. And we had 36th Street.
I retire myself, next month, will never be back there, and will miss it.

Miami - Almost like being in the USA. They even speak English, at times.

Happy contrails

Way back when, Brysons was the place to hang until the wee hours and hopefully you were picked to crew a DC-6 for a quick run South and back. Sometimes the crew didn't have allot of time to sober up.

Durty Harry's in FLL - European beers, great wings & scampis, hot (Swedish) waitress.
Not anymore.
Durty Harry's changed name and owners a couple of years ago.
They called it Shipwrecked for a while but the service and the food was pretty lousy towards the end.
Now the doors are closed and the place boarded up.

Ditto on the Hacienda next to LAX and the Thai/Chinese joint down the street.

Mike's in Miami...

Wasn't that the great little bar with the Pitts cowling and prop coming out of the back wall? Been a long time. Great place for cold draft.

PANC

If you just want to drink or quietly chat with someone, Club Paris can't be beat. I still like the Fancy Moose @ the Millennium Hotel. Humpy's is too noisy and so is the Brewhouse. Snow Goose is OK.

Is the ABC still there in PANC? Good beer and I seem to remember some kind of entertainment too.

Thumbs up Best Freight Dog Bars in the US

Toms NFL Bar on NW 36th Street Miami is under new management and business is booming.
The new owner is a keen football (soccer) fan and showing Premier league games. I watched Celtic V MUFC yesterday and the atmosphere was great. Happy hour hour from 3 till 7 pm ensures a good trade from local Aviators. Top class friendly service.

The joint that was one block south of the Hacienda in LAX is closed/torn down. The Thai lady, Nit, was subjected to the inflated rent of the land owner, and a bunch of locals and freightdogs could/would not be able to support Nit, so she very reluctently shut the place down. The building I guess has been demolished since. That was a true freightdog bar!

The "Ter Streep" in Ostend Belgium; "Diggers" in Bahrain, The "Bayhouse" in JFK,

And one or two others I'm sure I'm forgetting!

Not been to LAX for long time - (2003) - there was...
xxx
(1) The Proud Bird, near threshold of runways 25L/R - (Restaurant + Bar)
(used to be owned by retired Continental pilot)
(2) The bar in Hacienda Hotel, on S. Sepulveda - 1/2 mi from airport
(their restaurant La Mariposa is open all night, inexpensive)
(3) 1 block South of Hacienda, same side, small bar owned by Chinese lady
(cannot recall name - inexpensive food and beer - the only bar there)
xxx

-----------------------
(3) Does the "Grand Bar and Grill" ring any bells ?

MIA
Tom's NFL on 36th Street - just opposite of PanAm Academy.
Also 1 block North of 36th Street on Curtiss Parkway, 5 minutes walk from Tom's NFL.
Cannot remember the name, is the only bar there, on the LH side.
xxx
==================================================
And then there's the "Catch Of The Day" on NW 42nd short walk from the Crowne Plaza.
