MET Question - HK

Hey guys and girls,

A quick question, not really that important but just out of interest: over the last months I have noticed, that during daytime (0300z - 0500z) the wind direction at the airport will change from an easterly to a (north)-westerly, with another reversal back to an easterly wind around 1000z, even if the HK Observatory is generally forecasting an easterly wind for HK.

Land sea breeze effect or some other local phenomena? Sorry, if it sounds "met-geekish", but just an honest question! :\

Add 8 hours to get local time so I guess that you have answered your own question with Sea Breeze:D:D

As the sea breeze came in we could get at the 07 thresholds a 10 kt tailwind, and at the 25 thresholds also a 10 kt tailwind. In the middle flat calm.Just lasted a short time until the sea breeze settled.:zzz::zzz:

Met Briefing

Could someone who is going to see the session in the CX Auditorium ask them why they continually misreport the wx in Hong Kong.

It never ceases to amaze me how the weather can be few and sct with not a sign of blue sky anywhere. Does someone get a bonus if the wx is better or what?

HKG SA-METAR/TAF

Couple of issues here.

1. HKG Observatory is the service provider. Typical HKG Government working practices apply, with "job for life" and "don't stick your neck out" attitudes.

2. They are only reporting for a very small area. It is either a 3 or 5 km radius (I can't remember.... anyone with better info please post with your source). So during the summer it can be obvious to everyone that there will be a massive CB on a 5-10nm final for 25 during the afternoon. However, the Observatory have no remit to include that in their forecast.

3. There are now so many additional sources of weather at our finger-tips. Look at radar pictures etc!

So look at a picture before you leave the hotel in New York, what do you do 18 hours later when approaching HKG?

HKO

After living in HK for sometime I have 2 opinions on HKO.

1) They have warnings for just about everything and can only think of a few times where there has not been a warning up.

2) I am of the opinion that to do the forecast they simply stick head out of window followed quickly by a licked finger.
