Which you would spend and some if you opt out of company housing,so please don't consider it salary.
Been here 13 plus years 11 in the LHS basic is about 42K Dhs with between 5-6K Dhs flight pay, and then there are the deductions that vary between 3-6K dhs depending on if the school fees are coming out.

It's actually $30,300HKD which gets you a 2 bedroom apartment in Dubai, ok it's bigger than your place in Hong Kong but it's still only a 2 bedroom apartment. Then the salary of $30,125 (63,900HKD) is some $17,000HKD less. Even though it's tax free does it work out you'll be super rich? Doubt it and you still need to live in the Middle East

As garden shed stated, the devil is in the small print. Renumeration is therefore about the same. It comes down to - do you want to get messed around by the "experts" in the ME or the iCannots in SE Asia...neither? time to pack up and head home.

EK openly say expect 85-90 hours per month on their. I doubt they pay overtime , something that KA/CX do pay .
If a KA basic yr 1 captain did 90 hours in a month ( OT after 75 hrs) , he would earn around HK$40000 in overtime ( 18000 AED) . He would also earn around HK$20000 in hourly duty pay for the same month.
At EK basic salary plus flying allowance ( based on 90 hours) gives the quoted salary of AED 42695 ( HK$ 90500)
Basic KA skipper salary HK$ 115000 plus 20 000 flying allowance plus overtime based on 90 hours ( 40000) gives hk$ 175000. They then get 21k special allowance .
Minus 15% tax = hk $148000
Therefore , based on 90 hours the basic salary for a ka yr 1 skipper is at least 50k ( AED23000) more .
The big difference is accommodation. A standard contract KA skip gets $21000
in EK he gets hk$40000/ month or takes a 2500 sq ft villa. And not in Tung bloody Chung lol.

The special allowance is 32K for a skipper and 21,4K for a FO if I'm not mistaken.
Regardless I think the two jobs are very different from each other. I do think if one has three or more children Dubai would probably be an improvement QOL wise as being a C scale captain, not on the property ladder, you would be forking out half your salary to house all that gang.

Those who are talking up EK...by all means...go enjoy that "Quality of Life" in the ME. Take your wife and daughters there.

There are many pilots who have spent many many years at EK. As the previous poster mentioned, the real tragedy is CX have reduced terms to such an extent that EK is now a viable option. Especially when considering time to command and the subsequent total career earnings. The days of C scalers in HK buying an apartment are probably over. Do you want to spend your entire career making a local landlord rich? At least at EK you could get on the property ladder, which at least helps contribute to a better sense of well being and settled. I'm glad I don't have to make the choice, but for those of you younger C scale pilots, it's one you will probably have to make. I think CX will prove to be a graveyard for careers.

I agree Trafalgar - in that past EK was a great place to work and as you rightly stated there are many pilots there who have done well. However, given the behaviour and attitude of the "locals", the ME is no place to be taking your wife and daughter(s).
For the younger pilots, true, it could be a fun place for a limited period of time.
In the ME, if riding in a taxi and the taxi gets hit by an Emirati, it's not the Emiratis fault, it's not the taxi drivers fault...it's yours. Arab logic says that if you had not been in the country, there would not have been an accident.
So if you are single, yeah EK is a go - for a limited period of time. Take two buckets...one for cash, one for ME BS. Which ever gets full first...time to leave. However, the one for cash will never fill.

You can create a decent enough 'western' lifestyle in HK (if you're single w/o kids, or importing Cornish beer as a side business to pay for school fees); but in the ME, good luck. And you'll probably realise all too quickly that the vast majority of the BS in the ME that you and your family have to deal with won't come from work.
