Jet Airways Layoffs?

Anyone heard of layoffs at Jet Airways? Apperently their international operations losses are quite high. I turned down a contract with them in June and wondering if I was lucky in my decision.

They have 7 Boeing B777-300ER's, 35 Boeing 737-800/900's (+10 Options).and 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners coming.

Almost all airlines in India have been loosing money for some time now.

Forget it!
I had a look at them about one year ago. The interview was just a chat over a cup of coffee where we discussed tax-issues and questions about the contract. The sim-evaluation was a take-off, engine failure, ILS-approach, go around, one more approach and land.
Anybody can do that, and it might tell you something about their standards.

Good things about Jet Airways:
- Relaxed atmosphere. People seem to be friendly and approachable.
- New aircraft (but then: Every 777 in the world is still almost new)
- They own their own simulators and offer you to use them at your discretion, if you wish, for some extra sessions. This is probably the best thing to say about Jet.
- No questions asked about how you are going to leave your present employer, no letters needed, just come and fly. They take care of the rest.
- You can live almost anywhere you like in Europe; you commute at their expenses to and from BRX or LHR.

Bad things to say about it:
- Some information on their website is just to attract applicants but they draw back later, when you ask them about it. So be careful, and ask about everything you want to know.
- Salary is medium; you'll get what you may expect aywhere else, too.
- Very short contract (two years only), with totally uncertain future for renewal. See other threads about expat pilots in India. The last thing you'll want to happen is to be left standing on the road in the middle of the next worldwide recession.
- If you're a first officer: No upgrading ever.
- Looking at the dirty, cheap and basic office building, you don't really build up confidence. It's low-cost in every way you can imagine.
- Very long rotations. If I remember right, it's about 11 days or so (but not sure). Anyway, it was long enough to make me dislike it more.

Nothing special about this company; there may be worse ones, but this one is definitely a job for mercenaries. If you have some dark history in your career and can't join any other decent place, then go ahead and take it.

If you are not type-rated, they won't take you.
If you are, you can find something better.

I received an e-mail each month offering an interview date until the offers (mails) dried up June. I politely declined each prior offer due to schedule conflicts. I responded positively with each of my replies due to the fact that I still always keep my options open to leave Asia (entirely due to family/personal reasons) even though I have one of the best 777 jobs in the world - however, Asia isn't home and never will be thus my interest in JA. I was told hiring has been suspended. So are they still currently hiring 777 DEC's?

So what if I "don't know anything" then, dear JetAirways-Manager? I read your package-briefing letter (actually I still have it somewhere). So is there anything you'd like to add?
Maybe forgot to tell me something at the interview?
Or has it improved a lot in the past six months?

No.2 behind Singapore is very well; anybody can read the comments on SkyTrax by the way. But what does that have to do with the T&Cs for your expat-pilots? Because I'm not applying to you as a passenger...

It neither made me feel good nor bad about not getting a contract from you guys. I simply found something better, and I'm not gonna keep that a secret. You may not be the worst, but are by no means a great place to work for, and I'm gonna tell that to anybody who's asking me.

Just FYI, there are 17 ex EK, SIA, KAL and Asiana who joined 9W in the latest 12 months. No one of them were fired and all of them had been offered contract extentions on their previous airlines...
There are several applications from pilots flying fot these mentioned airlines.
Maybe it's not that bad work for JET!...

Anyway, a friend told me recruitment is freeze now.

cpdlcuser, if you had read my previous posts, you'd know the answer to all that.

- As I have already said: No chance for an upgrading, unless you're an Indian citizen. No way whatsoever.

- JetAirways only offers a short-term contract to expats, so obviously they will not type-rate you. There are enough local 777-wannabes in India. In fact, you will only get a validation for your ATPL, not even an Indian licence, therefore it is entirely up to you to get your rating. And since JetAirways doesn't have any 747s, that's that.

- LHR-base: I also already aswered that. Yes, you may live in London if you fly for them. You may live anywhere in Europe you like; they'll commute you to London or Bruxelles from your nearest home airport.

Your rotations would then be around eight or nine days at a time, twice per month.

I've been away and just picking up the thread. Thanks for the replies. To 777fly's comment about knocking it, I wasn't. I think JA is a good airline. I balked at Mumbai base. If it was BRU or YYZ I would have jumped at it.
I am retired (35 years at Air Canada) and was looking for flying. It seems that India is the only place where over 60's can get a contract. The Indian contract is, in my opinion one of the better ones. I hope they do well and are not laying off pilots.
