Arrow Helicopter pilots sweep the board at Guild of Air Pilots awards

Helicopter pilots always feature strongly in bravery awards presented by the Guild of Air Pilots, but they did so in exceptional numbers in all categories at last week’s annual Trophies & Awards Banquet at the London Guildhall.

There are too many to include in one post so I’ll summarise them here with links to individual citations:

The Prince Philip Helicopter Rescue Award
Awarded to an individual member, or a complete crew of a helicopter, for an act of outstanding courage or devotion to duty in the course of land or sea search and rescue operations, or for any innovation leading to the more effective or safer use of a helicopter for such purposes.
Awarded to: CREW OF ‘RESCUE 193’ of 771 NAVAL AIR SQUADRON
Link to full Citation

The Master's Medal
The Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators’ award for distinguished conduct. Awarded to any person in aviation, at any time, at the discretion of the Court of the Guild.
Awarded to: WARRANT OFFICER CLASS 1 CHALLIS and crew of 7 Flt AAC
Link to full Citation

The Grand Master's Commendation
Awarded at the discretion of the Grand Master (the Duke of York) and on the recommendation of the Court of the Guild for distinguished service in the air.
Awarded to: 202 SQUADRON ROYAL AIR FORCE
Link to full Citation

The Sir Barnes Wallis Medal
Awarded in recognition of an exceptional contribution to aviation.
Awarded to: 5 REGIMENT ARMY AIR CORPS
Link to full Citation

The Johnston Memorial Trophy
Awarded to a person or persons for an outstanding performance of air navigation or airmanship or for the development of new air navigation techniques and equipment.
Awarded to:
SEA KING MK7 TRIALS TEAM – Lt Cdrs Tite, Ling, Smith and Richardson
Link to full Citation

The Central Flying School Guild Trophy
A periodic award to an individual, group or organisation that, in the opinion of the Court of the Guild and with the endorsement of the Central Flying School, has made an outstanding contribution toward the achievement of excellence in the delivery of flying training or instructional standards. This award would not normally be awarded to a currently serving member of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.
Awarded to: CAPTAIN DEREK JONES
Link to full Citation

The Pike Trophy
Awarded to the individual who, in the opinion of the Court of the Guild, has made an outstanding contribution to the maintenance of high standards of basic flying instruction and safety. The award, which is bestowed on candidates not on active service in Her Majesty’s Regular Forces, takes into account working conditions and opportunities.
Awarded to: CAPTAIN ANDY GUTTERIDGE
Link to full Citation

The Guild Sword of Honour
Awarded for an outstanding contribution to General Aviation, ie Civil Aviation other than Air Transport.
Awarded to: WARRANT OFFICER CLASS 1 WATKINS
Link to full Citation

Congratulations to all.
