White House UFC Event Lighting Nearly Blinded Flight Crew on Approach to Reagan National

A commercial airline pilot that spoke to MeidasTouch this evening has filed aviation safety reports after powerful lighting used during the construction and testing of the UFC octagon on the White House grounds allegedly shone directly into their cockpit during a nighttime approach into Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), creating what the pilot described as one of the most severe visibility disruptions they have experienced in their career.

While laser strikes on aircraft are a known aviation hazard, the pilot emphasized that this incident did not involve lasers. Instead, it involved powerful white event lighting that they said created a similar, and potentially more dangerous, effect by overwhelming pilots’ vision during approach.

Following the incident, the pilot filed reports with both the Federal Aviation Administration and NASA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS), a confidential reporting program used by aviation professionals to document safety concerns and hazards.

The pilot also contacted a local FAA office to report the incident. According to their account, FAA personnel advised them to contact the White House regarding concerns about the lighting.

The reports raise questions about coordination between event organizers and aviation authorities given Reagan National’s unique location near some of the nation’s most sensitive airspace and busiest flight corridors. Aircraft approaching DCA routinely pass over Washington landmarks at relatively low altitudes during final approach.

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of aviation safety in the Washington region following the fatal midair collision near Reagan National earlier last year involving an American Airlines regional jet and a U.S. Army helicopter.

Aviation safety experts have long warned that sudden bright light exposure can temporarily impair a pilot’s night vision, particularly during approach and landing when crews are transitioning between instrument references and external visual cues.

It is not yet clear whether additional flight crews reported similar visibility issues during Sunday night’s event or whether the FAA plans to review the matter.

MeidasTouch has reached out to the FAA and received no immediate response.

Hi all,

A possible job has come up for me abroad and the comapny operates the EC120. However it is a job where I would need to gain the type rating at my own cost (got to do what you got to do to get a job these days it seems!).

I have spoken to Helicentre Liverpool, Heliflight and HeliAir and unfortunately they all no longer have access to/offer type ratings on the EC120. I'm aware it is a rare airframe in the UK however having been on the job hunt for a year now ( for context I'm a UK CAA CPL(H) 250hr pilot with ME/IR) and many unsuccessful job applications I don't want to have to say I can't get a type rating for a job I really want/need.

Any help from the wonderful rotary community for suggestions/contacts who may be able to help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure of the rules and regulations/if it's even possible surrounding getting a type rating for a UK licence outside of the UK if the wors comes to the worst so again any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

As the title says, i failed my recurrent (a320), first fail in my entire career. Everything was smooth up until the landing roll out, my fingers slipped and failed to deploy both thrust reversers to idle. Startled effect took place, attempted a second time and only the right thrust lever went on rev idle. Captain took over thrust control and use max reversers. The icing on the cake was that prior to descent, i briefed that i intended to vacate first exit on the runway due to the nature of the busy airfield, performance calculations met the criteria with autobrakes low but normally we would disconnect the autobrakes earlier. Because of the thrust control issue combined with the startled effect, i braked significantly harder to commit to the first exit where in hindsight letting the aircraft roll and vacate via the second was significantly the better decision. All factors combined, the examiner decided to fail me due to unsatisfactory workload management.

With all this said, my morale is deeply crushed. I even read online that at the airline level, only 1-5% of airline pilots fail a recurrent. I'm seeking advice if this is deeply going to affect my career or command upgrade, and if there are other similar people out there who have failed a line check and continued to have a successful career/captaincy etc. I am extremely bumped out at the moment.

edit: 4 years flying, 2000+ hours, 4th line check

G’day all,

Current DHC-6 Capt looking at making the jump to RFDS, likely QLD or WA ops. Trying to get my head around the roster reality before I pull the trigger on an EOI.

Situation: Partners job requires them being based in BNE/PER and I’d be looking to commute back 2-3 times per month if based elsewhere. Happy to jumpseat/commercial on days off.

Questions for current/ex-RFDS pilots:
Roster pattern – What are the common rosters running at the moment? Any bases more commute-friendly than others?

Days off blocks – Do you actually get usable blocks of 4+ days, or is it lots of 1-2 day breaks that make commuting pointless?

Base differences – Any intel on QLD vs WA?

Commute culture – Are there guys successfully commuting to capital cities, or does everyone just relocate? Any bases where management is more/less flexible?

Not after state secrets. Just trying to work out if I’m setting myself + partner up for failure taking a job where I can’t get home regularly.

Cheers

We can often learn from past accidents where many of todays Pprune readers may have been too young to have known about such events. The lessons are still there, however.

Here is the Final Report of the 1989 crash on take off into Auckland harbour, New Zealand on a night take off of a Convair 580 turbo prop. https://www.baaa-acro.com/sites/defa...-06/ZK-FTB.pdf

While I have summarised the circumstances of that accident below, it is the Final Report that gives the compete picture.

The habit of the captain to initiate take off flap retraction and reduce power to climb power shortly after lift off leaving his inexperienced copilot to cope with her faulty artificial horizon on a dark night take off was the primary cause of the accident which happened at the departure end of the runway The strong pitch down caused by flaps retracting as well as a pitch down with premature reduction to climb power coupled with the fact it was the copilots first night take off and she had a faulty AH shows she had the odd stacked against her. Find time to read the full Final Report.

https://www.baaa-acro.com/crash/cras...kland-3-killed

This is a crash that should never have happened. It was a night take off at Auckland carried out by the copilot from the right hand seat. It was the first time she had flown the Convair. The Convair normally uses some flap for take off. This particular captain was known for his propensity to select the flaps to up as soon as the aircraft is airborne. This is a dangerous and wrong technique. The flaps should be selected to up after take off at a safe minimum height of at least 500 ft. With the Convair, as the flaps retract there is a marked nose down change of trim.

It was known that the copilots artificial horizon was unreliable in its indications and this had been reported on previous flights. The company was awaiting the arrival of a spare AH but the captain who was also the chief pilot decided to fly the aircraft anyway.

The take off was carried out by the copilot whose AH was known to give erroneous indications. It was a dark night take off and her first take off in a Convair. After rotation the captain immediately selected the flaps to up causing the nose down change of trim. The copilot was unaware her AH was giving false indications and also unaware the captain was in the habit of retracting the flaps after take off without telling the copilot.

All this happened before the Convair has reached 200 ft agl. The nose down trim change coupled with a faulty AH on the copilot’s side meant that the aircraft descended into the ocean without either pilot being aware of it. The captain should never have given the night take off to the copilot especially as he was aware of the copilot having a faulty AH.

A sad lesson in the lack of airmanship by the captain, both in his habit of selecting flaps to up within seconds after lift off and flying with a known faulty AH on the copilot side.
