I will be changing my laptop shortly and would appreciate if anyone can assist with how i transfer my old files etc onto the new machine. Sure this sounds one of those novice questions to you all but i'm not sure if it is a simple job or not. As a matter of course i intend to purchase the Toshiba 2450 machine p4 2.6 etc, not sure if the graphics card can be improved upon with a different machine etc, however, overall it does seem quite a reasonable machine. I will use F. S. mainly for instrument practice etc so I feel graphics is important, thanks for any help and sorry if it all sounds a bit simple,
cheers

If your new machine has XP it will come with "files and settings transfer wizard", that will copy all your files and emails, settings etc across.
You will prob need a cable or cd burner though as the file sizes get large.

It depends on the type of files that you want to copy, if they are simply the usual load of documents and saved stuff that we all accumulate then floppies can almost do if you have a lot of patience. However if you have bigger files to move then you will want to explore other avenues.
Do you have a digital camera or similar, or know someone who does, then you can use it as a temporary storage space to move files between machines as you usually have a decent amount of disk space on camera's or associated cards.
If you want to spend a little cash then you could buy a USB flash drive which you can use to transfer files at a later date too, or between home and work etc.

or do a search in your usual tech supplier.
Use the features in Outlook/Outlook Express which will help you transfer your data between machines.

If both laptops have USB ports, invest in one of those neat USB memory stick thingies. Otherwise you could be stuck as I was bak in June when I transferred 350Mb of files from one laptop to another by using the embedded MS file transfer software and a serial file transfer cable. Here's what I said at the time:
"Thanks everyone for your advice.
The new computer (Dell Latitude X200) has a file transfer wizard; the instructions are very straightforward. Copy the relevant file and settings transfer program to a floppy, feed it to the old computer (Dell Latitude LT), connect the two together with a £20 serial file transfer cable and then watch the little dears merrily chatter away to eachother.
One snag - it took ages! I only wanted to transfer 350Mb of data from the folder I'd already prepared in 'My documents' - the transfer process took 16, yes, sixteen hours to complete!"
